Value pattern

Value drawing

A drawing devoid of color.

Plane

A flat surface, planes can be the fundamental structural unit of a drawing.

Cartoon

A full sized drawing made as a guide for a final work. From the Italian cartoon, meaning an artists preliminary sketch.

emotional line

A line that we associate with certain types of feelings, expressions or moods.

two-point perspective

A perspective system based upon 2 vanishing points. Things are angular to the picture plane

one point perspective

A perspective system based upon one vanishing point. Things are parallel to the picture plane.

Open composition

A type of composition in which parts of the subject extend beyond the picture plane.

Closed composition

A type of composition in which the entire subject exists within the picture.

Block in or map out

A type of contour line in which a drawing is made as the artist's eyes follow the form of the subject without looking at the paper.

blind contour line

A type of contour line in which the drawing is made as the artist's eyes follow the form of the subject without looking at the paper.

outer contour line

A type of contour line in which the exterior lines separate the interior and/or exterior forms.

cross contour line

A type of contour line that utilized parallel that move across the form in order to depict form and volume.

Optical mixing

A type of value application in which individual marks visually blend so that they are perceived as an area of value.

Continuous tone

A type of value application in which values are blended to create smooth and even transitions.

Additive

An artistic process in which the work is created by adding or layering materials.

Subtractive

An artistic process in which the work is created by removed or erasing material.

trompe l'oeil

An extreme kind of illusion meant to deceive the viewer that objects included are real.

Vine charcoal

Charcoal that is easy to dust, erase, perfect for life drawing, quick sketching or compositions that need constant reworking.

Willow charcoal

Charcoal that is used to cover large areas, very messy.

In perspective the height of the viewers eye level when looking at an object or scene.

Picture Plane

The imaginary plane corresponding to the surface of a picture, the extreme foreground of a drawing.

The outermost line of an object or figure by which it is defined or bounded.
