basic speed law: no faster is safe for current conditions
if a railroad crossing is controlled by gates, warning signal or a flag man
more than 15 mph
Must stop at
red flashing lights - at least 15 feet but not more than 50 feet
Must stop before:
train tracks, buses, school buses, trucks transporting hazardous loads
avoid tailgating
use 3-second rule (vehicle in front passes a sign, count 3 sec. until you pass the same sign). Use 4-second or more rule when being crowded by a tailgater, slippery roads, following motorcyclists on wet or icy roads, metal surfaces, gravel; driver behind you wants to pass, towing a trailer, following large vehicles that block your view ahead; see a bus, school bus or placard vehicle at railroad crossing, merging onto a freeway.
School bus
yellow flashing reminds you to slow down and prepare to stop. Red flashing says to stay stopped until the red light is turned off and the stop sign is moved back to the side.
