Dyspnea

Biot respirations

Irregular respirations varying in rate and depth and interrupted by periods of apnea; associated with increased intracranial pressure, brain damage at the level of the medulla, and respiratory compromise from drug poisoning

Ataxia

an abnormal pattern of breathing characterized by complete irregularity of breathing, with irregular pauses and increasing periods of apnea. As the breathing pattern deteriorates.

Platypnea

dyspnea worse with upright posture (i.e. pericarditis)

Cheyne-Stokes

pattern of breathing characterized by a gradual increase of depth and sometimes rate to a maximum level, followed by a decrease, resulting in apnea

Hypopnea

shallow breathing

Ability to breath only in the upright possition

Kussmaul breathing

Abnormally deep, regular, and increased in rate

Shortness of breath that awakens the individual in the middle of the night, usually in a panic with the feeling of suffocation.

Air trapping

incomplete emptying of alveoli during expiration due to loss of lung tissue elasticity (emphysema), bronchospasm (asthma), or airway obstruction
