Class 4
Flammable Solids, spontaneously combustible materials and dangerous when wet materials 4.1 flammable Solids 4.2 spontaneously combustible materials 4.3 water reactive substances/ dangerous when wet
Hazard identification codes or hazard identification numbers also referred to as Kemler Code displayed on intermodal containers
Found on the top half of the orange panel the 4 digit identification number is in the bottom half
Level C
Full or half face respirator plus hooded chemical resistant clothing ie splash suit
Class 2
Gases 2.1 Flammable Gases 2.2 Non flammable non toxic gases 2.3 toxic gases
If there is a fire or if a fire is involved?
Go directly to appropriate guide(orange bordered page) and use the evacuation information shown under Public Safety
Green Bordered Pages
Initial Isolation & Protective Actions Distances. This is for Toxic Inhalation Hazards(TIH) including certain chemical warfare agents, and water reactive materials which produce toxic gases upon contact with water. Provides two different types of recommended safe distances which are Initial Isolation Distances and Protective Action Distances. Table provides distances for both small(200 liters or less) and large (200 liters or more) for all highlighted materials. The list is further subdivided into daytime and nighttime situations
How many guides only refer to TIH or water reactive material (WRM)
5 guides
How many individual guides are there
62
If index entry is highlighted in green it is
A toxic inhalation hazard(TIH) material or dangerous water reactive.....
Department of defense
Being shipped by or for or to the department of defense
Who are resources to call

Small spill defined as
200 liters or less ie roughly 50 gallons or to be exact 52.84 gallons and 300 kilograms of solid or 661 pounds
What is considered a large spill
200 liters or more or greater than 50 gallons or more specific 52.84 or more than 300 kilograms or 661 pounds of solid material
How many guides refer to both TIH and non TIH

What does the right side of the guide contain
Emergency response guidance...... Fire situations, spill or leak incidents and first aid information
Class 1
Explosive 1.1 explosions with mass explosion hazard 1.2 explosions with projectile Hazarda 1.3 explosives with predominantly a fire hazard 1.4 explosives with no significant blast hazard 1.5 very insensitive explosives with a mass explosion hazard 1.6 extremely insensitive articles
Class 3
Flammable Liquids and combustible liquids
What are the blue bordered pages
List of dangerous goods in alphabetical order of material name. Displays the name of the material followed by guide number then 4 digit ID number
What are the yellow bordered pages
List of dangerous goods in numerical order of ID number. The list displays the 4 digit ID number of the material
What do you do if you can see a placard but a number guide can't be obtained?
Locate the placard in the table of placards pg 16-17 then go to the 3 digit guide shown next to the sample placard
If something is noted as a Toxic inhalation hazard or dangerous water reactive ie index entry highlighted in yellow or blue what do you do
Look for the ID # and name of the material in the table of Initial Isolation and Protective Actions Distances
If guide number is supplemented with the letter P it indicates
Material may undergo violent polymerization if subjected to heat or contamination
Class 9
Miscellaneous Dangerous goods
Orange Bordered pages
Most important section because it's where all safety recommendations are provided. It comprises 62 individual guides in 2 page format. Left hand side provides safety related information and right hand side provides emergency response guidance and activities for fire situations, spills or leak incidents and first aid
How to identify the material
One: -The 4-digit ID number on a Placard or Orange Pannel - The 4 digit ID number on a shipping doc or package -The name of the material on a shipping doc , placard or package If the above steps don't work look up the materials 3 digit guide number in either the ID number index or name of material index If that doesn't work turn to the numbered guide orange bordered pages. Which gives you general info.
Biological incident
Onset of symptoms hours or days later. Infection rate is larger due to the movement of individuals spreading the biological agent
National Response Center
Operated by Coast Gaurd recieved reports when hazardous substances are spilled
Class 5
Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides 5.1 oxidizing substances 5.2 organic peroxides
Initial response phase
Period following arrival at the scene of an incident during which the presence and or identification of goods is confirmed, protective actions and the area securing is initiated and qualified personnel are requested

What does the left hand side of the guide book contain
Safety related information... Potential Hazards Public Safety, protective clothing and evacuation
If an entry is highlighted in green and there is no fire go directly to?
Table of Initial Isolation and Protective Action Distances ( Green Bordered pages) and look up the ID# and the name of material to determine initial isolation and distance
