Altruism
a prosocial behavior, doing things for others at your own expense
Parental investment hypothesis
although the alarm caller is at greater risk by signaling, his or her children may survive as a consequence
Kin-selected altruism
genetic benefit that derives from altruistic acts directed at close relatives with whom the altruist shares genes
Reciprocal Altruism
helping another individual with the expectation of being helped in return (Trivers) (2 hunters work together so they can both eat)
Direct fitness
measures an individual's direct reproductive success via the production of offspring
Conspicuous altruism
more common, but even more anonymous altruistic acts are usually made known to their romantic partner
Competitive altruism
refers to the display of altruism in order to accrue social benefits. Altruism is attractive in mates
Predator confusion hypothesis
the call creates confusion resulting in mad scramble of squirrels rushing for safety; the confusion helps the squirrels to escape

the effects of an individual's actions on the reproductive success of genetic relatives weighted by the degree of genetic relatedness
