Database

An organized collection of facts related to a specific topic or purpose.

Syntax

The arrangement of the arguments in a function.

Filtering controls

The arrows that display in the column titles of Excel data when the data is converted to a table and that enable you to sort and filter the data.

Microsoft Access

A database program used to manage database files.

Conditional formatting

A format that changes the appearance of a cell-- for example, by adding cell shading or font color-based on a condition; if the condition is true, the cell is formatted based on that condition, and if the condition is false, the cell is not formatted.

Text function

A function that can be used to combine or separate data, change case, and apply formatting to a string of characters.

DCOUNT function

A function that counts the number of occurrences of a specified condition in a database.

DAVERAGE function

A function that determines an average in a database that is limited by criteria set for one or more cells.

DSUM function

A function that sums a column of values in a database that is limited by criteria set for one or more cells.

Get External Data

A group of commands that enables you to bring data from an Access database, from the Web, from a text file, or from an XML file into Excel without repeatedly copying the data.

Record

A horizontal row in a database table that stores all of the data about one database item.

Extensible Markup Language (XML)

A language that structures data in text files so that it can be read by other systems regardless of the hardware platform or operating system.

Data connection

A link to external data that automatically updates an excel workbook from the original data whenever the original data source gets new information.

Function

A predefined formula that performs a calculation by using specific values, called arguments, in a particular order or structure.

Icon set

A set of three, four, or five small graphic images that make your data visually easier to interpret.

Field

A specific type of data such as name, employee number, or social security number that is stored in columns.

Delimited

A text file in which the text is separated by commas or tabs.

PROPER

A text function that capitalizes the first letter of each word.

UPPER

A text function that changes the case of the characters in a string, making all characters in uppercase.

LOWER

A text function that changes the case of the characters in a string, making all characters lowercase.

MID

A text function that extracts a series of characters from a text string given the location of the beginning character.

TRIM

A text function that removes extra blank spaces from a string of characters.

LEFT

A text function that returns the specified number of characters from the beginning (left) of a string of characters.

RIGHT

A text function that returns the specified number of characters from the end (right) of a strong of characters.

CONCATENATE

A text function used to join up to 255 strings of characters.

Flash fill

An Excel feature that predicts how to alter data based upon the pattern you enter into the cell at the beginning of the column. The data must be in the adjacent column to use Flash Fill.

Schema

An XML file that contains the rules for what can and cannot reside in an XML data file.

Table

Data stored in a format of rows and columns.

Information

Data that has been organized or processed in a useful manner.

Data

Facts about people, events, things, or ideas.

Compound criteria

The use of two or more criteria on the same row--all conditions must be met for the records to be included in the results.

Arguments

The values that an Excel function uses to perform calculations or operations.
