1920s and 1930s

Women and African Americans held higher status than in past decades. Home economists built a reputation for educating citizens based on scientific research. The home economics profession responded to societal trends by offering courses in stereotypical homemaking skills.

1940s and 1950s

Traditional values were redefined. After being referred to as "the enemy" by feminist leaders, home economics leaders critically analyzed the profession which resulted in a career-focus. The discipline began to change once again to meet societal needs by offering more specialized knowledge and increasing discipline-based research in areas such as housing, nutrition, apparel, consumer economics, and child studies.

1960s and 1970s

Feminist, Robin Morgan, dubbed Home Economists as "the enemy".

1973

Consumerism was at an all-time high. College level courses, such as fashion-merchandising and hospitality management were the most popular in the home economics course offerings. Home Economics became known as Family and Consumer Sciences in the United States in an effort to position the profession for the 21st Century2000 and beyond: The Body of Knowledge, or a philosophical framework for the future of Family and Consumer Sciences was developed in an effort to identify "what elements should inform scholarship, curricula, policy, and practice" (Baugher et al., 2000, p. 30) by Family and Consumer Sciences practitioners in the 21st century. Societal needs revolving around the core concepts identified in the body of knowledge has brought about revitalization to the discipline of Family and Consumer Sciences.

1980s and 1990s
