Formal Operational Stage (Piaget)
Piagets final stage, in which adolescents develop the capacity for abstract, systematic, scientific thinking. Begins around 11 years of age.
Hypothetico-deductive reasoning
A formal operational problem-solving strategy in which adolescents start with a hypothesis, or prediction about variable that might possible affect an outcome. Then they deduce logical, testable inferences from that hypothesis, systematically isolating and combining variables to see which inferences are confirmed in the real world.
Propositional thought
A type of formal operational reasoning in which adolescents evaluate the logic of verbal statements without referring to real-world circumstances.
