what is Geoprocessing?

A GIS operation used to manipulate GIS data. A typical geoprocessing operation takes an input dataset, performs an operation on that dataset, and returns the result of the operation as an output dataset.

what is a geo-database?

A database or file structure used primarily to store, query, and manipulate spatial data. Geo-databases store geometry, a spatial reference system, attributes, and behavioral rules for data.

what is a point?

A geometric element defined by a pair of x,y coordinates.

what is a Choropleth map ?

A thematic map in which areas are colored or shaded to reflect the density of the mapped phenomenon (values) or to symbolize classes within it.

what is a Spatial Join ?

A type of table join operation in which fields from one layer's attribute table are appended to another layer's attribute table based on the relative locations of the features in the two layers.

what is Shape-files (Shape-file Feature Class) ?

A vector data storage format for storing the location, shape, and attributes of geographic features. A shapefile is stored in a set of related files and contains one feature class.

what is a buffer?

A zone around a map feature measured in units of distance or time. A buffer is useful for proximity analysis.

what is a relationship?

An operation that establishes a temporary connection between records in two tables using a key common to both.

what is Styles (ESRI Styles)?

An organized collection of predefined colors, symbols, properties of symbols, and map elements. Styles promote standardization and consistency in mapping products.

what does the (Attribute) Join do?

Appending the fields of one table to those of another through an attribute or field common to both tables. A join is usually used to attach more attributes to the attribute table of a geographic layer.

what does the clear selection tool do?

Clears (unselects) all selected features.

what does ESRI stand for?

Environmental Systems Research Institute

GIS

Geographic Information System, A collection of computer hardware, software, and geographic data for capturing, storing, updating, manipulating, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information.

GPS

Global Positioning System, A constellation of originally twenty-four (24) satellites developed & deployed by the US Department of Defense that orbit the Earth at an altitude of about 20,200 kilometers.

what is a feature class?

In ArcGIS, a collection of geographic features with the same geometry type (such as point, line, or polygon), the same attributes, and the same spatial reference

what is a Pin Map ?

Informal definition of a map which shows point-specific data and locations.

what is ArcCatalog?

Managing, organizing, and designing GIS tables/data.

what is a Thematic Map ?

Map displaying features of one type that are generally placed together in a single geographical layer or theme.

what is a polygon

On a map, a closed shape defined by a connected sequence of x,y coordinate pairs, where the first and last coordinate pair are the same and all other pairs are unique

What is a line (polyline)

On a map, a shape defined by a connected series of unique x,y coordinate pairs. A line may be straight or curved.

what does pan to selected features do?

Pan the map to a selected feature or features without changing the extents/scale

what is Arcmap?

Primary module - contains most functionality (symbolizing, layouts, labeling, etc.).

what does attriubute tables tell us?

Selecting a Record selects a Feature on the map. Clearing Selections Sorting, hiding and moving Fields

what does the select all button do?

Selects all features within a layer

what is ArcToolbox

System of functional tools

what is longitude?

The angular distance, usually expressed in degrees, minutes, and seconds, of the location of a point on the earth's surface east or west of an arbitrarily defined meridian (usually the Greenwich prime meridian). X

what is latitude?

The angular distance, usually measured in degrees north or south of the equator. Lines of latitude are also referred to as parallels. Y

what is transformation

The process of converting the coordinates of a map or an image from one system to another, typically by shifting, rotating, scaling, skewing, or projecting them

what is a scale?

The ratio or relationship between a distance or area on a map and the corresponding distance or area on the ground, commonly expressed as a fraction or ratio.

what was GPS first used for?

Usage was originally intended for the military with limited civilian access (by degraded signal). Civilian access is now just about fully authorized and available to anyone with a GPS receiver

what does symbolozing features mean?

assigning them colors, markers, sizes, widths, angles, patterns, transparency, and other properties by which they can be recognized on a map.

what does Geometric Interval do?

based on geometry

what does Dynamic Labels do?

can change labeling by the feature or all features at once.

what does Standard Deviation do?

creates classes according to a specified deviation from the mean.

what does Quintile method do?

creates classes containing equal number of values.

what are some examples of points on ArcMap?

lightpoles, sign posts, mailbox locations,

what are the 7 classifications of ArcGis?

natural breaks, equal interval, defined interval, quantile, standard deviation, geometric interval, and manual

what are the three graphic basic elements for every layout

north arrow, legend, scale(graphic and text)

what are some examples of lines(polyline)

roads, rivers, railroads, pipelines
