How Much CO2?

5.5 lbs per package

How can CO2 be carried on board?

As Cargo - Carbon Dioxide Solid (Dry Ice) in quantities not exceeding 2.5 Kg (5.5 pounds) per package and is used as a refrigerant for the package contents is not subject to DG/HM packaging, handling, labeling, storage, or pilot notification requirements and therefore may be transported on SAC aircraft

Does Silver Airways accept dangerous or hazardous goods?

As a general rule, Silver Airways Corp. does not accept, load, label, store, or transport DGHM.

What is COMAT?

Company materials and aircraft spare parts.

What does DGHM stand for?

Dangerous Goods/Hazardous Materials

To avoid inadvertent acceptance of hazardous materials from shippers who are unaware of their hazardous contents, what must silver airways employees do?

Inspect and question about the content of such packages.

Will packages that display hazardous materials be accepted on Silver Airways?

No - Any package or cargo that displays a hazardous materials marking or label, or is known or suspected to contain hazardous material, will not be accepted or loaded aboard Silver Airways Corp. aircraft.

How often must an employee be trained in hazardous materials before they perform any assigned duties or responsibilities involving the acceptance, handling, or carriage of baggage or cargo?

No employee or agent of Silver Airways Corp. unless they have completed, within the preceding 12 months, the approved company Initial or recurrent Hazardous Materials Recognition Training program.

What happens if such hazardous materials are discovered?

The DGHM will be put in a safe place pending notification of management and the shipper for proper disposition. Then the incident will be reported according to CFR Part 175.31 - Reports of Discrepancies.

Will Silver accept a spare tire for transport?

Yes - A tire assembly with a serviceable tire provided the tire is not inflated to a gauge pressure exceeding the maximum pressure for that tire

Must shippers of hazardous materials state that a package contains hazardous materials?

Yes - The General Transportation Requirements of 49 CFR states that shippers of hazardous materials must properly declare any such material at the time it is offered for transportation to the carrier. Therefore, it is an acceptable practice to assume that their conspicuous markings and labels, which are required to be displayed outside the package, may allow one to recognize a hazardous material package

What substances are not considered Infections substances (accepted as United QUICK PAK only). The following are considered Exceptions from Class 6.2. They are not subject to DG/HM packaging, handling, labeling, storage, or pilot notification requirements and therefore may be transported on SAC aircraft:

1. A material that does not contain an infectious substance or that is unlikely to cause disease in humans or animals. 2. Non-infectious biological materials from humans, animals, or plants. 3. A material containing micro-organisms that are non-pathogenic to humans or animals. 4. A material containing pathogens that have been neutralized or inactivated such that they no longer pose a health risk. 5. Blood collected for the purpose of blood transfusion or the preparation of blood products; plasma; plasma derivatives; blood components; tissues or organs intended for use in transplant operations; and human cell, tissues, and cellular and tissue-based products. 6. Blood, blood plasma, and blood components collected for the purpose of blood transfusion or the preparation of blood products and sent for testing as part of the collection process where the person collecting the blood has reason to believe it contains NO infectious substance. 7. Dried blood spots or specimens for fecal occult blood detection placed on absorbent filter paper or other material. 8. A human or animal sample (including, but not limited to, excreta, blood and its components, tissue and tissue fluids, and body parts) being transported for routine testing not related to the diagnosis of an infectious disease, such as for drug/alcohol testing, cholesterol testing, blood glucose level testing, prostate specific antibody testing, testing to monitor kidney or liver function, or pregnancy testing, or for tests for diagnosis of non-infectious diseases, such as cancer biopsies, and for which there is a low probability the sample is infectious.

How specifically can CO2 be carried on the airplane?

1. The package must be marked with the name of the contents being cooled, the net weight of the dry ice or an indication the net weight is 2.5 (5.5 pounds) or less, and marked "Carbon Dioxide, Solid" or "Dry Ice". 2. The dry ice must be transported in packaging designed and constructed to permit the release of carbon dioxide gas to prevent a build-up of pressure that could rupture the packaging. 3. The maximum allowed in any one cargo compartment or bin on any aircraft is 77 pounds. (173.217d)
