Wellness

- the achievement of a person's best in all SIX components of health -unrealistic to achieve complete wellness all the time -it represents that a person is neither completely healthy nor completely unhealthy

What are the six components of Health?(CH)

-Physical -Emotional -Social -Mental -Spiritual -Environmental

How can you protect your health?

-You can protect your health by focusing on controllable risk factors. -know the leading causes of death for people in your age group -be aware of the leading causes of deaths for people of all ages.

Heredity (IoYW)

-heart conditions, high blood pressure, etc. -the traits you inherit from your parents

What are the four Influences on Your Wellness (IoYW)

-hereditary -social -cultural -environmental

Environmental (CH)

-keeping your air and water clean, your food safe, and the land around you enjoyable and safe. -recycling -has access to clear air and water -clean and uncrowded living spaces

Sedentary

-not taking part in physical activity on a regular basis

Public Health

-the practice of protecting and improving the health of people in a community.

What You Can Do to Adress Health?

-volunteer at a clinic -take meals to the elderly -promote health issues at school -train for a career in a health field -set a good example through your behavior.

Four Ways Society Addresses Health Problems: (Explain each)

1. Medical Advances- conducting medical research is one way our society addresses health concerns. (Ex: Insulin pump) 2. Technology- through the use of computers, lasers, revolutionary technologies, new and better prodectus 3. Public Policy- governmental policies and regulations help address health problems- tobacco taxod and no cmokking 4. Education- key factor in the prevention of a disease or illness (health class and community agencies)

Know your audience- some issues bring up strong feelings and opinions in people. The success of your message can depend on how sensitive you are to these feelings and opinons

Balance the six Components Make good choices Take action. You have the power to do all of this and to live life to the fullest.

Taking Charge of Your Wellness (3)

Knowledge-you need information to make good choices about your health Lifestyle- you can improve your health by making behavioral changes to your lifestyle. (putting your knowledge into action and NOT smoking) Attitude- By focusing on your attitudes, you can act in ways that make you a healthier person. A person's way of thing or attitude greatly affects a person's health. (Stress and anger, relaxation and don't sweat the small stuff, making best of a bad situation- long term illness, MOST IMPORTANTLY- the way you feel about yourself)

eat poorly, engage in health risk behaviors, never exercise, unhappy -can change any time - monthly, daily, yearly, etc. -have control to change your behaviors

Spiritual(CH)

involves having spiritual direction and understanding your purpose in life. -includes living according to one's ethics, morals, and values. -practicing a religion -at peace with yourself and those around you

is a strong belief or ideal

Risk Factors

is anything that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other health problems.

Mental(CH)

is the ability to recognize reality and cope with the demands of daily life -having high self-esteem -feeling comfortable and happy about yourself -free of mental illness -enjoys trying new things

Social(CH)

is the quality of your relationship with friends, family, teachers, and others. Respects others, stays clear of those who don't treat them with respect and tolerance.

Health

is the state of well being in which all the components of health are in balance - to be truly healthy you must take care of all 6 components

Emotional(CH)

it involves coping with your feelings and expressing your emotions in a positive, non-destructive way.

Physical (CH)

refers to the way your body functions- eating right, getting regular exercise, being at your recommended body weight, avoiding drugs and alcohol, and free of disease and sickness.

Social (IoYW)

relationships you have with other people. Friends- peer pressure, make you a better person Family- how they handle crisis - yelling and screaming or talking it out

Health Literacy

the knowledge of health information needed to make good choices about your health.

Enviornmental (IoYW)

the surroundings, the area where you live and all the things you have

Culture (IoYW)

your culture can strongly your health - the values, beliefs, and practices shared by people that have a common background.
