Describe the 3 structures which develop outside the embryo
Amniotic sac: a thin, fluidlike membrane that surrounds and protects the developing embryo. Umbilical cord: a ropelike structure that connects the embryo and the mother's placenta Placenta: a thick, blood-rich tissue that lines the walls of the uterus during pregnancy and nourishes the embryo.
Stages of birth and position of baby
Dilation: the baby's head is resting on the cervix Passage theough canal: passes through birth canal and emerges mother's body Afterbirth: out of body, gets umbilical cord/placenta removed
First Trimester
Embryo becomes fetus Nervous system responds to stimuli Fingers and toes form Heart begins beating Fetus develops human profile
Third Trimester
Fetus may dream Fetus uses all five senses Fetus weighs 6 to 9 pounds Fetus passes water from bladder Baby is ready to be born
Describe what parts of the embryo have developed or begun to develop by the eighth week
Heart forms Brain forming Mouth, nostrils, eyelids, hands, fingers, feet and toes began to form Nervous system can respond to stimuli Cardiovascular system is fully functional
How can materials in a mother's blood reach a developing embryo even though the two blood supplies are kept separate?
Materials diffuse through the umbilical cord.
Describe the body systems that develop from each of the three tissue layers present in the developing embryo
One layer becomes the respiratory and digestive systems A second layer develops into muscle, bones, blood vessels, and skin A third layer forms the nervous system, sense organs, and mouth
Embryo
The clusters of cells that develop between the third and eighth week of pregnancy
Fetus
The developing group of cells after about the eighth week
At what point in pregnancy can a fetus survive if it is born? Will it need special attention if it is boen early?
The fetus can survive if born after 24 weeks but will require special attention
What does labor refer to?
The final stage of pregnancy in which the uterus contracts and pushes the baby out of the mother's body
Why should a pregnant female not use tobacco and alcohol?
The harmful substances can cross the placenta and harm the developing embryo
Implantation
The process in which the zygote attaches to the uterine wall
Fertilization
The union of a male sperm and a female egg cell (also known as conception)
What purpose does crying serve for the baby?
To clear the lungs of amniotic fluid
What are two ways ultrasound technology can be used during a pregnancy?
To monitor a fetus in the uterus through reflection of sound waves To determine position of the fetus before birth Detect multiple births Determine gender Check organs/development Detect identical twins
What term is used to describe the 3 month period in pregnancy?
Trimesters
Second Trimester
Weight increases rapidly Fetus can kick Fetus can hear conversations Fetus has regular sleep/wake cycle Limbs reach full proportion
