Tornado

A narrow, violently rotating column of air that extends from the base of a thunderstorm to the ground. Because wind is invisible, it is hard to see a tornado unless it forms a condensation funnel made up of water droplets, dust and debris. Tornadoes are the most violent of all atmospheric storms, and can kill more poeple than a hurricane.

Fujita Scale

A scale for rating tornado intensity, based primarily on the damage tornadoes inflict on human-built structures and vegetation.

Hurricane

A tropical cyclone, which forms over tropical or subtropical waters. It becomes A Hurricane when the winds reach 74 mph (119 kph).

Hurricane Katrina

An extremely destructive and deadly tropical cyclone that was the costliest natural disaster and one of the five deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States. This was known as the worst hurricane in U.S. history, It killed 1,833 people, had a surge of 27.8 ft and was the highest surge ever recorded.

Saffir Simpson Scale

Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane's sustained wind speed. This scale estimates potential property damage. Hurricanes reaching Category 3 and higher are considered major hurricanes because of their potential for significant loss of life and damage.

Hail

Large or small pieces of ice that fall from a supercell thunderstorm because of an updraft.

What was the width of the largest hailstone ?

17.8 inches On June 22, 2003, in Vivian, SD.

It mowed through SE Missouri, South of Illinois, and SW of Indiana.

Fujiwhara effect

The Fujiwhara effect, sometimes referred to as Fujiwara interaction or binary interaction, is when two nearby cyclonic vortices orbit each other and close the distance between the circulations of their corresponding low-pressure areas.

Twin tornadoes

This is relatively one of the most disastrous and weirdest phenomenon on the face of the earth. This is basically related to the Fujiwara effect except for tornadoes. When two tornadoes dance around each other without disturbing their natural flow of air.

Category 5 hurricane
