What impact did the Spanish American War have on America, Cuba and the Philippines?

At the beginning of the war, we had Hawaii--- at the end of the war, which was only a couple months later, we had Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. US never acquired Cuba, but the amendments that it forced on Cuba had some lasting effects on Cuba from Americans--- especially Guantanamo Bay, which remained in Cuba even after the Platt Amendment was taken away during the 1930's. Theodore Roosevelt was the leader of the "Rough Riders" in Cuba during that war, and because of that war, he was seen as a war hero and was able to rise up to presidency.

Many (but not all) Progressives supported Prohibition in the United States in order to destroy the political power of local bosses based in saloons. At the same time, women's suffrage was promoted to bring a "purer" female vote into the arena. A second theme was building an Efficiency Movement in every sector that could identify old ways that needed modernizing.

However, if you look at it the military wanted to investigate what really happened rather than immediately go to war. After extensive debate, the treaty is ratified by the U.S. senate on February 6, 1899. Under the treaty, the U.S. acquires control over Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines.
