Causes of the Great Depression( NONE caused the depression alone)

1. Stock Market crash 2. Overproduction of goods by farmers and factoriesà after WW1, many places in Europe desperately needed America's farmed and manufactured goods à helped US economy roar; all time high. 3. Europe becomes more self sufficient and independent - do not need as many goodsà less goods in the US à if an oversupply, prices go down; factories and farmers make less moneyà wages cut, jobs are eliminated make less money

o Causes of the Great Depression(not one of these solely caused the great depression)

1. The Crash of the Stock Market 2. Over production of goods by farmers and factories -> After WW1, many place in Europe desperately needed America's farmed and manufactured goods-> this helped the US economy roar and reach an all time high. As the decade progressed and as a result, they do not need as many goods-> less foods are being purchased-> this leads to an oversupply of goods in the US -> when there is an oversupply, prices go down, factories and farmers make less money-> wages are cut, jobs are eliminated -> domino effect- these effects hit the nation towards the end of the decade. 3. Installment buying, borrowing too much money from banks and not able to cover the debt or amount owed. 4. The weakness in the banking system- banks made loans to people who invested in the stock market--> when the stock market crashed investors could not pay their loans back to the banks --> banks could not give depositors their money back because there was not a guarantee system in place( today, in banks that are approved by the Federal Government, the federal government promises to guarantee depositors money up to a certain amount, FDIC)--> in this case, depositors lose everything--> banks close--> economy is crippled.

Why th e New Deal is bad.

1.Govt gains too much power and is too involved in the nation's economy; Govt taking away too many rights and freedoms from the people; Makes US look like a communist nation 2.Programs cost money --> govt spending more than its collecting -> creating high debt 3.Govt targets big business, giving more rights, freedom and powers to the workers (FLSA, Collective Bargaining and the Wagner Act.) 4.Many Americans believe those programs are not working fast enough. 5.Remember Hoover; govt intervention 6.Vulnerable to other countries 7.Homeless rate increases because of the increased debt

Cuba

1959 - Fidel Castro leads a Communist revolution in Cuba and is able to set up Cuba's first Communist government Castro and the Communist government seize control of all private property, all private businesses, and many of these properties and businesses are American owned or have American ties this now begins to threaten our national security and economy, another outcome of this is many upper and middle class Cubans who have had their business and properties taken from them leave Cuba and emigrate to the US........

o Hoover's Response(he believed the policy: laissez- faire which means "hands off"):

5. Hoover didn't think the federal government should get directly involved in helping businesses or the economy; he felt it was up to the businesses and people to work its way out of this downturn Hoover did not believe in offering government assistance Hoover becomes increasingly more unpopular.

The assassination of the Archduke - Heir to the Hungarian throne whose assassination sparked WW1 . People in the country disagreed with his views and thought that they would be bad for the country . He was assassinated because of these views. Events of WWII: Totalitarian State- a single party controls the government and every aspect of people's lives. Concentration Camps- prison camps for civilians who are considered enemies of the state. Munich Conference- Hitler promised that Germany would seek no further territory once it had acquired the Sudetenland . To preserve the peace, Britain and France agreed that Germany should have the Sudetenland. Nazi Soviet Pact- Hitler signed with Stalin. The two rival dictators agreed not to attack each other. Secretly, they also agreed to divide Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe . ( August 1939) Axis- Italy, Japan, and six other nations Allies - Britain, France, the Soviet Union, the United States, China, and 45 other countries. Lend Lease Act- March 19, 1941 Allowed sales or loans of war materials to "any country whose defense the president deems vital to the defense of the United States." Under the Lend Lease Act, the United States sent air planes, tanks, guns and amunition to Great Britian. The British merchant ships transported the goods with escorts of American war ships providing protection as far as Island. The Atlantic Charter - August 1941. Was issued by Roosevelt and Church Hill. It set goals for the post war world. The two leaders agreed to seek no territory from the war. They pledged to support "the right of all peoples to choose the form of government under which they would live." The Charter also called for "a permenant system of security"similar to the League of Nations. Embargo in Japan - The US tried to stop Japanese aggression by refusing to sell oil and scrap metal to Japan. This embargo angered the Japanese because they badly needed these resources. "Sparks will fly before long," predicted an American diplomat. Japanese and American officials met November 1941. Japan asked the US to lift its trade embargo. The US called on Japan to withdraw its armies from China and Southeast Asia. Japan planned a top secret attack on the US "Pearl Harbor" the Japanese portion of WWII. Island hopping - A strategy of capturing some Japanese islands and going around others. Italian Aggression - Mussolini and Italy began to try and imperalize lands, especially in Ethopia (North Africa) - 1935 - not only did the world recognize that Italy was trying to become a world power but Mussolini was satisfying the Italian people's hunger to gain land after WWI while successfully distracting the people of Italy from their economic problems. League of Nations - could not help Italy because they were not strong enough. Nazi Party- preached a message of racial hatred - Germany had not lost the war, but rather, the Jews had stabbed the Germans in the back and helped the allies (Great Britian, France) win the war. D Day - June 6, 1944. A fleet of 4,000 allied ships carried an invasion forced France. Allied troops scrambled ashore at Normady despite the intense German gunfire and heavy losses allied forces pushed on. August 25, 1944 the allies entered Paris after 4 years of Nazi rule, the Parisians greeted their librators with joy . Within a month all of France was freed. Battle of Midway - Americans planes sank four Japanese aircraft carriers. The battle severely hampered the Japanes offense and kept Japan from attacking Hawaii again. Operation Over Lord - This is the code name for the invasion of Europe. General Eisenhower was appointed commander of allied forces in Europe. He has to organize a huge army and take it across the English Channel and proivde it with food, amminonition and other supplies. By June 1944 almost million troops were ready for the invasion. Munich Conference - Sepember 1938 Hitler promises he won't seek to gain any more territory. The LON is relieved, it appears a war has been avoided and their decisions to not get involved to be the right one. This promise by Hitler turns out to be a flat lie- Hitler makes this promise to keep LON off Germany's back. The Good Neighbor Policy- FDR withdraws troops from Haiti and Nicaragua. Then cancelled Platt Amendment which limited the independence of Cuba . FDR's Quote : "I have passed unnumbered hours, I shall pass unnumbered more hours, thinking and planning how war may be kept from this nation."- 1936 ( He is saying that war is coming and we need to prepare for its arrival) League of Nations- general association of nations that had protected the independence fo all countries -- large or small. Included Paris London Milan and Rome . Treaty of Versailles- June 1919- the most important treaty of Peace of Paris, was ready . None of the Allies was satisfied with it . Germany, which had not even been allowed to send delegates to the peace talks, was shocked by the terms of the treaty. Still, its representative had no choice but sign. In treaty Germany had full blame for the war. Do you think the US should have dropped the Atomic Bomb: After WWI (April 1917) America was in a trading relationship with Japan. We gave them metal, coal and oil and in return they gave us naval bases and access to their ports. To help recover the resources from WWI, Japan started to Imperalize China for its resources. (Define Imperalism). This was a complete violation of the Treaty of Versailles (Define the Treaty). In response to the imperalistic behavior, America embargoed (Do I have to define embargo) Japan by cutting off resources and stopped trading with them. No goods, such as oil, coal, metal, or iron, were sent to Japan. Japan became angry and appalled by America's behavior with the embargo and in anger and response to our refusal to trade with them Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in July 1940. Japan wanted to weaken our Eastern air force and imperalize Hawaii. The US acted in revenge and used the atomic bomb to destroy Hiroshima, Japan. I think we should have dropped the Atomic Bomb because if we hadn't we would have had to send ground troops and enter a deadly and serious war with Japan. Also, by dropping the Atomic Bomb we saved millions of American lives. The use of the Atomic Bomb was very efficient for the U.S. Yes, the US should have dropped the atomic bomb because it achieved three goals we wanted to accomplish: 1) regain the Phillipines; 2) invade and bomb Japan; and 3) remain a world power. Regain the Phillipines: It was important to regain the Phillipines because this country was in a location that let us keep an eye on Japan. The Phillipines was also in bombing range of Japan. Also, taking over the Phillipines meant that the US was regaining its power over Japan. PEARL HARBOR - Invade and bomb Japan: In response to Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 at 7:55 am, the US bombed Japan. By bombing Hiroshima, Japan, the US weakened other parts of Japan. The bombing was a way of destroying an entire city without the risk of American lives. The bombing seriously crippled Japan leaving them with limited ways to attack or retailiate against the US. US Remains A world power: The fact that the US had a bomb able to take out an entire city confirmed the image that the US was a super power. The fact that the US, while building an infacture and recovering from WWII, was able to destroy an entire Japanase city with one bomb, confirmed the power of our country. The fact that the League of Nations created the Treaty of Versallies which said that after WWI all countries are free demoncratic nations and the land gained by Italy and Germany were given to France and England. The US did not approve of and were not a part of the Treaty of V. Of the five greatest countries (France, England, Italy and Germany) only one (the US) did not approve of the Treaty. America was and still is the most powerful nation in the world. This was proven with the atomic bomb. America is technologically advanced and uses its advantages as a super power to keep its people safe. One of the technological uses was the creation of the atomic bomb used to show America's power, send a message to Japan and the rest of the nation and in the end used to destroy an entire city of Japan. Events of WWII: Totalitarian State- a single party controls the government and every aspect of people's lives. Concentration Camps- prison camps for civilians who are considered enemies of the state. Munich Conference- Hitler promised that Germany would seek no further territory once it had acquired the Sudetenland . Then cancelled Platt Amendment which limited the independence of Cuba . FDR's Quote : "I have passed unnumbered hours, I shall pass unnumbered more hours, thinking and planning how war may be kept from this nation."- 1936 ( He is saying that war is coming and we need to prepare for its arrival) Neutrality Acts- bans the sale of arms/ weapons or even loans to countries at war; further more, this warns Americans NOT to travel on ships of countries who are at war- this appears to be a dedicated effort to stay neutral. Cash and Carry- the US could sell arms and war materials to the Allies as long as the Allies paid in cash and would carry the goods on their ships from US ports. Atlantic Charter- a meeting between FDR and England's Prime Minister, Winston Churchill - the purpose of this meeting is to set up goals for a post war world Neutrality Acts-banned weapons sales of loans to countries at tries at war Good Neighbor policy - FDR withdrew FDR: The only American President who won four consecutive Presidential elections. After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, American grew suspicious of Japanese Americans and they were put into Intermitent camps. This was an example of human mistreatment and taking away human rights. They were accused because of their race. Concentration camps of Germany were an example of human mistreatment. Hitler accused the Jewish people of Europe's problems says they haled the Allied forces win the war. False accusation. Jews were tortured, beaten, starved and ultimately killed. There were examples of human mistreatment in WWII. LEAD TO WWII - Japan, Italy and Germany were upset with the Treaty. Knowing that wihtout the US the League of Nations (creator of the Treaty) was too weak and afraid of another world war to. Beinga world power and promotor of democracy our governent fails so to the other small nations. when these nations rise at the dictators such as Hitler and Mussolini. Hitler was the dictator of Germany who created the Nazis and Mullilini was t he dictator of Italy. Both exploited the harsh econmical conditions and used that to manipulate the poeple who gain the loyalty of the poeple. Due to the depression the times were hard and the economy was down and the government was failing. The failing of hte democracy helped the rising of communisim and marxism. What happens to Korea after WWII At the end of World War Two, Korea was effectively spilt in two; the south was in the hands of America while Russia dominated the north.Right after the Atomic bomb was dropped on Japan in August 1945, Russia declared war on Japan, and invaded Japanese conquered territory, of which Korea was one. Korea was divided. Russia took North Korea and the US took South Korea. By October 29, 1929, Black Tuesday, the stock market crashed and people were losing money. Some veteran investors knew this was coming due to the lack of regulation. Millions of Americans could not pay their bills were going bankrupt and becoming hobos. This all happened becasue the stock market crashed.. Because of the regulation of banking system, people have more confidence in the safety of their money. FDR created the SEC or Security Exchange Commission - an agency that provided security for rookie investors. This achieved the goal of the New Deal by encouraging people to invest (putting money into the ecomony). Postdam Declaration - Was a meeting between Roosevelt and Churchill in 1941 aimed at setting up goals for the post war world. Totalitarian State-where a single party controls the government and nearly every aspect of the peoples' lives. Basic human rights are not guaranteed-citizens must obey the government without question and criticism is not accepted-education, press, economy ,religion, are all controlled by the dictator of this totalitarian state. Final Solution-this is the Nazi Party and Hitler plan to kill all Jews not just in Germany but Europe as well Laws are passed against the Jews depriving them of their jobs, their possessions, their way of life and their freedom. Germany Surrenders-May 7,1945 VE Day-May 8,1945- known as victory in Europe--> Allies, most specifically America, now switches its entire focus to the Pacific(Japan) August 6, 1945- US bombs Hiroshima Japan August 9,1945 - US bombs Nagasaki Japan Focus of War switches It's very important when thinking of the war in the Pacific to NOT compare it to the war in Europe--> different strategies and ways of thinking must be used because the enviroment geography , and enemy are completely different . Since mid 1942, the Allied goals in the Pacific were to : 1. Regain the Philippine Islands 2. Invade Japan Marshall Plan (recall despair in 1930's) - Secretary of State George Marshall visits post war Europe and sees the massive destruction and despair throughout the towns and countries. He fears this devastation will create conditions and an environment which will be ripe for a Communist takeover (at risk areas) à Marshall proposes to rebuild Europe and help them resist Communism à 1948-1952 US provided $12 billion ($93 billion today) in aid to Western Europe, this aid is used to help rebuild infrastructure, economies, governments etc. all in the hopes of helping these nations resist Communism Berlin Airlift - see page 812 1. Summary a. Hundreds of American and British planes carried out tons of food, fuel, and other supplies to the 2 million West Berliners every day . The airlift lasted about a year. Stalin finally saw that the West would not abandon West Berlin. In May 1949, he lifted blockade. After the blockade, the US, Great Britain, France merged their zones into the Federal Republic of Germany, West Germany. Berlin Wall 1. Summary a. It was a wall that had separated democracy and communism.( East Berlin from West Berlin) People who had attempted to cross the wall were shot or captured. b. It separate family and friends NATO-France, West Germany, Turkey, Italy, Greece, Great Britain Norway Warsaw Pact- Soviet Union, Poland, East Germany Quote - Truman, 1947, pg 811 - "The free peoples of the world look to us for support in maintaining their freedoms. If we falter in our leadership, we may endanger the peace of the world - and we shall surely endanger the welfare of our nation." 3. Truman Doctrine - provide aid to "at risk" nations in hopes of helping them resist Communist expansion - 4. Containment Policy - the policy of keeping the Soviet Union within its existing boundaries 1. Greece and Turkey - March 1947, the US grants $400 million to these "at risk" nations to help them resist Comm. Origins of the Cold War- After WWII, the US and the Soviet Union plunged into deep, long, world encompassing conflict. This was a struggle between the two super powers of the world, a struggle between Communist nations and Democratic nations, a struggle in ideology. This was an arms race to see which nation could develop the most nuclear weapons. The Cold War was not really an all out war as in soldiers in combat, but rather a battle over whose way of life, whose government, whose technology and influence throughout the world was superior (a new form of imperialism). While the American forces attempted to get more countries to adopt democracy, the Soviet Union attempted to get more countries to adopt Communism. This struggle lasted nearly 50 years! Why would any nation or person want a Communistic government? Because a communist nation promotes a classless society, its citizens, IN THEORY, are all equal. A classless society does not have wide gaps between the rich and the poor, quality of life is similar amongst everyone citizen. It creates a sense of equality that, IN THEORY, does not exist in a democratic society. Every citizen is working towards the betterment of the country and government. It's very important to understand the differences between life in a democratic state and life in a Communist state. United Nations - a world organization aimed at settling disputes among its member nations; there is also a committee within the UN, called the UN Security Council this council discusses how to deal with conflicts which might threaten peace Unlike the LON the UN has power behind their purpose so if you messed with the UN you would be in trouble for sure. 1949 - Cold War Changes - there are two events that take place during this year which change the face of the Cold War completely 1. The Soviet Union successfully creates and tests an atomic bomb 5. The Domino Affect, if one nation falls then all the other small countries in that region will fall to communist. 6. China converts to Communism thanks to a communist revolution led by Mao Zedong. Now, 25% of the planet is under Communist influence.....FYI, the UN Security Council does not recognize China as an independent Communist nation. AS a result,
