it is so they can run amuk=direct raw encounters with subconscious, swamps, crowds, fog, darkness, feuds, heat, unpleasantness, people, life, death
What's the purpose of a scene where characters are eating together or "breaking bread"?
it's an act of communion, sharing, peace, and goodwill it also implies that the characters are saying "I'm with you and I like you." unless it's to get on the good side of an enemy or an employer.

knight, dragon, holy grail, princess

older man representing corrupt values, a young innocent female, a stripping away of her youth, continued life force of older male, death of younger woman
