Neurotransmitters

Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers necessary for the rapid communication between neurons in a reflex reaction. ACh for instance, would allow motor neurons to communicate and contract muscles in the arm and hand to move away from the hot pan.

Amygdala

The amygdala is linked to emotion, specifically aggression and fear. Upon touching the hot pan, the amygdala will stimulate pain signals to the brain that eventually result in the person yelling out in pain.

The Endocrine System

The endocrine system is a set of glands that secrete hormones that travel through the bloodstream and affect other tissues. The Pancreas, for example, could trigger the flight-or-fight response, causing the secretion of adrenaline and increased heart rate.

Pain Reflex

The pain reflex will cause the hand to be pulled away from the hot pan through involuntary muscle control.

Sensory Cortex

The sensory cortex registers and processes body touch and movement sensations. Upon touching the hot pan, the sensory cortex will process the pain signals and send them to nearby association areas.

Thalamus

The thalamus directs messages to the sensory receiving areas in the cortex and will cause conscious perception of heat and pain.
