Psalm 1:1-3

*Anonymous Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. Nehemiah 2:1-3

*Author Nehemiah... see bottom for explanation Geo: From Persia to Jerusalem In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before so the king asked me, "Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart." I was very much afraid, but I said to the King, "May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruines, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?" *The book of Nehemiah could be read as a sequel to the book of Ezra, and some scholars believe the two were originally one work. It is possible that Ezra compiled Nehemiah's original accounts with other material to create the book of Nehemiah. However, most scholars believe the book was written by Nehemiah.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Galatians 3:6-9

Abraham Believed=Righteousness Author: Paul TO: churches in So. Galatia; had hand in starting them on his 1st missionary journey to Asia Minor. SEE MORE AT BOTTOM* 6 So also Abraham "believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." 7 Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. 8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: "All nations will be blessed through you." 9 So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. ---------------------------------------------------- *Paul's close relationship to these churches explains extremely strong tone he took with them. Galatians exhibits Paul at his angriest, as he risked the good favor of the converts in those churches to make sure they were on the path of truth and not led off into deception. To stress seriousness of his purpose, he took the pen from his scribe and wrote the end of the letter himself in large letters (Galatians 6:11).

Any of his people among you may go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the LORD, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem." GEO Continued: The book of Ezra records two separate time periods directly following the seventy years of Babylonian captivity. Ezra 1-6 covers the first return of Jews from captivity, led by Zerubbabel—a period of twenty-three years beginning with the edict of Cyrus of Persia and ending at the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem (538-515 BC). Ezra 7-10 picks up the story more than sixty years later, when Ezra led the second group of exiles to Israel (458 BC). It is worth noting that in this history of the early Christian church, Luke mentioned neither Paul's death (AD 64-68) nor the persecution of Christians that broke out under Nero (AD 64). More than likely, Luke completed the book before either of these events occurred, sometime between AD 60 and AD 62, while Paul sat in prison, awaiting the resolution of his appeal.

1 Corinthians 15:54-58

Death Swallowed in Victory / Labor NOT in vain 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." 55 "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be any curse. The detailed descriptions of court life and traditions, as well as the events that occurred in the book, point to an eyewitness author. Because his perspective was pro-Jewish, scholars believe he was a Jew writing for the remnant that had returned to Judah under Zerubbabel. Some have suggested Mordecai himself was the author, though the accolades for him found in the text suggest that another person, perhaps one of his younger contemporaries, was the author.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty." 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for." 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. ------------------------------------------------------ *Paul ministered Philippi 2nd missionary journey, ~3 months. The apostle Paul wrote to the Romans from the Greek city of Corinth in AD 57, just three years after the 16-year-old Nero had ascended to the throne as Emperor of Rome. The political situation in the capital had not yet deteriorated for the Roman Christians, as Nero wouldn't begin his persecution of them until he made them scapegoats after the great Roman fire in AD 64. Therefore, Paul wrote to a church that was experiencing a time of relative peace, but a church that he felt needed a strong dose of basic gospel doctrine.

Qualifications for Deacons | *Paul SEE BOTTOM FOR DETAILS OF 1 TIMOTHY ------------------------------------------------------ 8 In the same way, deacons[a] are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. 9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. ----------------------------------------------------- *The first of Paul's final series of letters—along w/2 Timothy & Titus called the Pastoral Epistles—1 Timothy offers practical and pastoral advice from aging apostle Paul to young pastor Timothy working in the church at Ephesus. Released from Roman prison-allowed travel to Ephesus & eventually placed Timothy there. Paul then went to Macedonia to preach, where he heard reports of Timothy's work at Ephesus that prompted him to write 1 Timothy, ~ AD 63.

Ezekiel 36:26

Remove Stony heart & give you a heart of flesh *Ezekiel, son of Buzi Geo: Jerusalem, Babylon & Egypt To: Jews in captivity in Babylon I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

Mark 10:23-25

Rich Young Man | *John Mark - Not one of the 12 disciples. Accompanied Paul on 1st Missionary Journey. A budding Jerusalem church met in his mother's home. * MORE BELOW GEO: Roman feel suggests Mark in Rome, writing from Peter's recollections sometime before that apostle's death (ca. AD 64-68), possibly composed btwn AD 57 and AD 59. ----------------------------------------------------- 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!" 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, "Children, how hard it is[a] to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." ---------------------------------------------------- Mark's most significant personal connection was with Peter, likely Mark's source for the material in the gospel. Mark's mother's house was a regular enough stop for Peter that the servants recognized him by voice alone (Acts 12:12-14). And it appears that Mark was present at Gethsemane, a young man watching the proceedings from a safe distance (Mark 14:51-52), leading some scholars to believe the Last Supper took place in Mark's home.

Habakkuk 2:4-5

Righteous live by his faithfulness | *Habakkuk TO: Judah, the So. Kingdom | 612-539 BC GEO: Judah PPL: Habakkuk & Babylonians ------------------------------------------------- 4 "See, the enemy is puffed up; his desires are not upright—but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness— 5 indeed, wine betrays him; he is arrogant and never at rest. Because he is as greedy as the grave and like death is never satisfied, he gathers to himself all the nations and takes captive all the peoples. ------------------------------------------------- Commentary: If we look at this in reverse, is it not saying that the proud are going to die? But the just will live by faith. Indeed, the just are humble. The contrast goes unstated, but it is nonetheless there, between the just person and the proud person. The just person submits to God by faith. This is written in a way that indicates that the proud cannot live by faith. A proud person will live by his desires rather than in faith, humbly submitting to God. His desire is not to submit to God. Why? Because the spiritual qualities that the spirit in man can generate are essentially confined to the things of men: sight, sound, touch, hearing, and smelling—and being "tuned in" to demonic influences (Ephesians 2:2).

Mark 10:41-45

Serving Others | *John Mark --------------------------------------------------- 41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Matthew 12:38-40

Sign of Jonah | *Matthew/Levi ---------------------------------------------- 38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from you." 39 He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Romans 5:12

Sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin.

Philemon 15-16

Slave=Dear Brother in Lord | *Paul 15 Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back forever— 16 no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a fellow man and as a brother in the Lord. -----------------------------------------------------Philemon had visited Ephesus & converted under Paul's teaching. A slaveowner from the nearby city of Colossae. Paul addressed his "beloved brother" as a "fellow worker," a title given to those who served for a time alongside Paul. A kinship existed between Paul & Philemon, that served a significant purpose in light of the circumstance that brought about the letter. Slave, Onesimus, escaped from owner, Philemon; ran away from Colossae to Rome hoping to disappear in crowd. In Rome, Onesimus, came in contact w/Paul, who led the runaway slave to faith in Jesus Christ. Paul had already been planning to send a letter to the Colossian church by the hand of Tychicus. In AD 60 or 61 from Roman prison, Paul wrote a personal letter to Philemon and sent Onesimus the slave back to Colossae.

The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh's horses and chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea. During the last watch of the night the LORD looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion. See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals."

Talmud

The Talmud is the most vital manuscript of the conventional Judaism religion. It is literally the Hebrew word for "learning," and is sometimes referred to as the six orders of the Mishnah. The Talmud contains the history of the Jewish religion, as well as their laws and beliefs. It is the basic tool for learning the ethics behind the customs of their religion.

Numbers: Where are we?

The events of the book began in the second year after the Israelites departed Egypt, as they camped at Mount Sinai around 1444 BC (Numbers 1:1). The narrative ends thirty-eight years later "in the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho" (36:13) in 1406 BC. Numbers records the people's long wandering in the desert of Sinai, their time at the oasis of Kadesh-barnea, and their eventual arrival at the banks of the Jordan River across from the Promised Land. The Lord directed the message of Numbers toward the younger generation, children of the former slaves who escaped through the Red Sea. Except for Joshua, Caleb, and Moses, the older generation—everyone twenty years old or older at the time of the first census—died before the completion of Numbers, due to their disobedience and disbelief (Numbers 14:22-30). Moses completed the book before his death (Deuteronomy 31:24). Information from: https://www.insight.org/resources/bible/the-pentateuch/numbers

Romans 12:1-2

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 8:1-4

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you[a] free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh,[b] God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.[c] And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

But the LORD, came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."

James 1:2-8

Trials & Temptation - Consider it pure JOY Author: thought James Jesus half-brother * ---------------------------------------------------- Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. ----------------------------------------------------- * James not a follower of Jesus during His time on earth, but became apostle in vein of Paul, as one who had seen/believed post-resurrection . After witnessing the Lord's resurrected body, James became a leader of Jerusalem church. Peter singled him out among other Christians following Peter's miraculous release from prison.
