Purus River
This is a long tributary of the Amazon River, located in the western central part of the southern tributaries of the larger river. It has its source in southeastern Peru near the border with Brazil, and flows northeastward for nearly two thousand miles to its confluence with the Amazon close to the large city of Manaus in the east. This river is one of the most crooked in the world, and its length in a straight line from source to mouth is less than half its actual length.
Tocantins River
This is the easternmost major tributary of the Amazon River, on the southern side of the larger river. It flows north from its source in eastern central Brazil for over 1,500 miles, entering the Amazon at its mouth on the Atlantic Ocean just south of the island of Marajo. This river's main tributary is the Araguaia River, and its name means "toucan's beak" in an indigenous language.
Araguaia River
This is the major tributary of the Tocantins River, which is the easternmost main tributary of the Amazon River. It flows from its source in the center of the country northwards, meeting the Tocantins in the northern central part of the country. At this river's confluence, it has a nearly equal flow to that of the Tocantins, and its name means "River of the Macaws" in an indigenous language.
