What was the story of Ashoka? Why are the Edicts of Ashoka such important and revolutionary ideas?
The king Ashoka, attacked the eastern kingdom of Kalinga (orissa) had a great external conflict after the battle, yearning for justice. In war,everyone suffers- people cut off from their families and it is a tragedy for everyone. Ashoka hardhat hit on one of the most dangerous ideas in history, nonviolence. Once Ashoka converted to Buddhism, he said "From now on, I desire nonviolence for all creatures and I resolve to conquer only by persuasion alone." Ashoka formed in his mind an idea of how a government should be ran. The principles of citizenship and nonviolence. ( first time in world history) Ashoka carved edicts on stone pillars- all humans are family. Ashoka they created a empire of peace. This was, Ashoka's rule of law.
