Why was India able to gain its freedom?

In 1885, Indian nationalists formed the Indian National Congress to achieve these goals. In 1906, the large Muslim population formed the Muslim League to protect their rights, even calling for the creation of a separate state. In 1947, India gained their independence from Great Britain, due in large part to the strong leadership of Mohandas Gandhi. At the same time, Britain created East and West Pakistan as Muslim states separate from India. East Pakistan later became Bangladesh.
