During protests against the British government, Indian soldiers whom fought for the British in WWI were shot. General Dyer, who ordered this command, was then knighted. Indians are angered and don't trust the British

It was split based off of religion. Hindus and Muslims. But the Hindu elites didn't like this because they had no say over the Muslims but the Muslims liked this because they felt that they were finally being recognized by the British.
Effects of WWI on Indians (British had control remember)
The war provided a break from a previous conflict. However, after the war a recession and influenza broke out. The British government did not take care of the Indians. This leads to protest.
