Institutional Racism

3 forms of institutional racism

1. based on overt racist ideas 2. institutional practices that are originally racist but no longer are, however, policy might still be in effect 3. institutions that unintentionally restrict chances of certain groups (i.e., racial profiling)

Example: racial profiling: visible minorities are more likely to be stopped by police than white people --> experiment results: black/ minority respondents more likely to say they had contact with police

Example: seasonal migrant farmworkers that come in from Mexico and Caribbean to work on farms and then leave. At one time, government said they could only stay for summer months because could not brave Canadian winters (still in effect)
