Of the 10 Essential Public Health Services, choose one and describe why you feel it is important. Your answer should be a minimum of 200 words.
3. Inform, educate, and empower people about health issues In my opinion, this is one of the most important of the 10 essential public health services for a myriad of reasons. Without the knowledge to combat health issues, individuals will unknowingly damage themselves and others through the spread of misinformation and unhealthy habits. This can be seen through the recent covid-19 pandemic, where misinformation about the virus, and at times plain lies, damaged our society to a point where not only were individuals dying from the virus but our very social structure was being tested to the point of near collapse. Without the correct information being spread, and more importantly with incorrect information such as conspiracy theories being peddled through Facebook and other social media platforms we were left in a terrible situation that I hope for the sake of our country never comes to pass again. Stepping aside from the covid-19 pandemic, there are many more cases of misinformation being spread from word of mouth, unreliable news sites, as well as our very own elected politicians. It is incredibly important to have reliable sources of information that can benefit individuals' health and overall well-being but to also debunk any misinformation that may be circling the many sources of news that we have at our disposal.
