RADON GAS

A naturally-occurring, chemically inert, radioactive gas that is not detectable by human senses. As a gas, it can move readily through particles of soil and rock and can accumulate under the slabs and foundations of homes where it can easily enter into the living space through construction cracks and openings.

VOLTAGE, NOMINAL

A nominal value assigned to a circuit or system for the purpose of conveniently designating its voltage class (e.g., 120/240). The actual voltage at which a circuit operates can vary from the nominal within a range that permits satisfactory operation of equipment.

PRIVATELY OWNED (NONRENTAL) LOT

A parcel of real estate outside of a manufactured home rental community (park) where the land and the manufactured home to be installed thereon are held in common ownership.

SWITCHES - Isolating switch

A switch intended for isolating an electric circuit from the source of power. It has no interrupting rating and is intended to be operated only after the circuit has been opened by some other means.

SWITCHES - Motor-circuit switch

A switch intended for isolating an electric circuit from the source of power. It has no interrupting rating and is intended to be operated only after the circuit has been opened by some other means.

SWITCHES - General-use switch

A switch intended for use in general distribution and branch circuits. It is rated in amperes and is capable of interrupting its rated current at its rated voltage.

UNGROUNDED

Not connected to ground or to a conductive body that extends the ground connection.

That which is built or constructed.

GROUND

The earth.

VOLTAGE (OF A CIRCUIT)

The greatest root-mean-square (rms) (effective) difference of potential between any two conductors of the circuit concerned.

IDENTIFIED

(As applied to equipment.) Recognizable as suitable for the specific purpose, function, use, environment, application, etc., where described in a particular code requirement.

EXPOSED

(As applied to live parts.) Capable of being inadvertently touched or approached nearer than a safe distance by a person. It is applied to parts not suitably guarded, isolated or insulated.

ISOLATED

(As applied to location.) Not readily accessible to persons unless special means for access are used.

PLENUM

A compartment or chamber to which one or more air ducts are connected and that forms part of the air distribution system.

LUMINAIRE

A complete lighting unit consisting of a light source such as a lamp or lamps together with the parts designed to position the light source and connect it to the power supply. A luminaire can include parts to protect the light source or the ballast or to distribute the light. A lampholder itself is not a luminaire.

GROUNDING ELECTRODE

A conducting object through which a direct connection to earth is established.

GROUNDING CONDUCTOR

A conductor used to connect equipment or the grounded circuit of a wiring system to a grounding electrode or electrodes.

GROUNDING ELECTRODE CONDUCTOR

A conductor used to connect the system grounded conductor or the equipment to a grounding electrode or to a point on the grounding electrode system.

DRAIN TILE LOOP

A continuous length of drain tile or perforated pipe extending around all or part of the internal or external perimeter of a basement or crawl space footing.

SOIL-GAS-RETARDER

A continuous membrane of 6-mil (0.15 mm) polyethylene or other equivalent material used to retard the flow of soil gases into a building.

GROUND-FAULT CIRCUIT-INTERRUPTER

A device intended for the protection of personnel that functions to de-energize a circuit or portion thereof within an established period of time when a current to ground exceeds the value for a Class A device.

INTERSYSTEM BONDING TERMINATION

A device that provides a means for connecting communications system(s) grounding conductor(s) and bonding conductor(s) at the service equipment or at the disconnecting means for buildings or structures supplied by a feeder or branch.

SELF-CONTAINED SPA OR HOT TUB

A factory-fabricated unit consisting of a spa or hot tub vessel with all water-circulating, heating and control equipment integral to the unit. Equipment may include pumps, air blowers, heaters, luminaires, controls and sanitizer generators.

PACKAGED SPA OR HOT TUB EQUIPMENT ASSEMBLY

A factory-fabricated unit consisting of water-circulating, heating and control equipment mounted on a common base, intended to operate a spa or hot tub. Equipment may include pumps, air blowers, heaters, luminaires, controls and sanitizer generators.

BARRIER

A fence, wall, building wall or combination thereof which completely surrounds the swimming pool and obstructs access to the swimming pool.

SWITCHES - General-use snap switch

A form of general-use switch constructed so that it can be installed in device boxes or on box covers or otherwise used in conjunction with wiring systems recognized by this code.

EQUIPMENT

A general term including material, fittings, devices, appliances, luminaires, apparatus, machinery and the like used as a part of, or in connection with, an electrical installation.

SPA OR HOT TUB

A hydromassage pool, or tub for recreational or therapeutic use, not located in health care facilities, designed for immersion of users, and usually having a filter, heater, and motor-driven blower. They are installed indoors or outdoors, on the ground or supporting structure, or in the ground or supporting structure. Generally, a spa or hot tub is not designed or intended to have its contents drained or discharged after each use.

CORD-AND-PLUG-CONNECTED LIGHTING ASSEMBLY

A lighting assembly consisting of a cord-and-plug-connected transformer and a luminaire intended for installation in the wall of a spa, hot tub, or storable pool.

THROUGH-WALL LIGHTING ASSEMBLY

A lighting assembly intended for installation above grade, on or through the wall of a pool, consisting of two interconnected groups of components separated by the pool wall.

LOCATION, DRY

A location not normally subject to dampness or wetness. A location classified as dry may be temporarily subject to dampness or wetness, as in the case of a building under construction.

NO-NICHE LUMINAIRE

A luminaire intended for installation above or below the water without a niche.

WET-NICHE LUMINAIRE

A luminaire intended for installation in a forming shell mounted in a pool or fountain structure where the luminaire will be completely surrounded by water.

DRY-NICHE LUMINAIRE

A luminaire intended for installation in the wall of a pool or fountain in a niche that is sealed against the entry of pool water.

HYDROMASSAGE BATHTUB

A permanently installed bathtub equipped with a recirculating piping system, pump, and associated equipment. It is designed so it can accept, circulate and discharge water upon each use.

OUTLET

A point on the wiring system at which current is taken to supply utilization equipment.

RECEPTACLE

A receptacle is a contact device installed at the outlet for the connection of an attachment plug. A single receptacle is a single contact device with no other contact device on the same yoke. A multiple receptacle is two or more contact devices on the same yoke.

PANELBOARD

A single panel or group of panel units designed for assembly in the form of a single panel, including buses and automatic overcurrent devices, and equipped with or without switches for the control of light, heat or power circuits, designed to be placed in a cabinet or cutout box placed in or against a wall, partition or other support and accessible only from the front.

FORMING SHELL

A structure designed to support a wet-niche luminaire assembly and intended for mounting in a pool or fountain structure.

MANUFACTURED HOME

A structure transportable in one or more sections which, in the traveling mode, is 8 body feet (2438 body mm) or more in width or 40 body feet (12 192 body mm) or more in length or, when erected on site, is 320 or more square feet (30 m2), and which is built on a permanent chassis and designed to be used as a dwelling with or without a permanent foundation when connected to the required utilities, and includes the plumbing, heating, air-conditioning and electrical systems contained therein; except that such term shall include any structure which meets all the requirements of this paragraph except the size requirements and with respect to which the manufacturer voluntarily files a certification required by the secretary (HUD) and complies with the standards established under this title - For mobile homes built prior to June 15, 1976, a label certifying compliance to the Standard for Mobile Homes, NFPA 501, ANSI 119.1, in effect at the time of manufacture is required. For the purpose of these provisions, a mobile home shall be considered a manufactured home

SUBSLAB DEPRESSURIZATION SYSTEM (Active)

A system designed to achieve lower sub-slab air pressure relative to indoor air pressure by use of a fan-powered vent drawing air from beneath the slab.

SUBSLAB DEPRESSURIZATION SYSTEM (Passive)

A system designed to achieve lower sub-slab air pressure relative to indoor air pressure by use of a vent pipe routed through the conditioned space of a building and connecting the sub-slab area with outdoor air, thereby relying on the convective flow of air upward in the vent to draw air from beneath the slab.

SUBMEMBRANE DEPRESSURIZATION SYSTEM

A system designed to achieve lower-sub-membrane air pressure relative to crawl space air pressure by use of a vent drawing air from beneath the soil-gas-retarder membrane.

GROUNDED CONDUCTOR

A system or circuit conductor that is intentionally grounded.

MULTIOUTLET ASSEMBLY

A type of surface, or flush, or freestanding raceway; designed to hold conductors and receptacles, assembled in the field or at the factory.

FEEDER

All circuit conductors between the service equipment, or the source of a separately derived system, or other power supply source and the final branch-circuit overcurrent device.

FITTING

An accessory such as a locknut, bushing or other part of a wiring system that is intended primarily to perform a mechanical rather than an electrical function.

KITCHEN

An area with a sink and permanent facilities for food preparation and cooking.

POWER OUTLET

An enclosed assembly that may include receptacles, circuit breakers, fuseholders, fused switches, buses and watt-hour meter mounting means, intended to supply and control power to mobile homes, recreational vehicles or boats, or to serve as a means for distributing power required to operate mobile or temporarily installed equipment.

RACEWAY

An enclosed channel of metal or nonmetallic materials designed expressly for holding wires, cables, or busbars, with additional functions as permitted in this code. Raceways include, but are not limited to, rigid metal conduit, rigid nonmetallic conduit, intermediate metal conduit, liquid-tight flexible conduit, flexible metallic tubing, flexible metal conduit, electrical nonmetallic tubing, electrical metallic tubing, underfloor raceways, cellular concrete floor raceways, cellular metal floor raceways, surface raceways, wireways and busways.

LIGHTING OUTLET

An outlet intended for the direct connection of a lampholder or luminaire.

RECEPTACLE OUTLET

An outlet where one or more receptacles are installed.

ACCESSORY BUILDING

Any building or structure, or portion thereto, located on the same property as a manufactured home which does not qualify as a manufactured home as defined herein.

OVERCURRENT

Any current in excess of the rated current of equipment or the ampacity of a conductor. Such current might result from overload, short circuit or ground fault.

REMOTE-CONTROL CIRCUIT

Any electrical circuit that controls any other circuit through a relay or an equivalent device.

SIGNALING CIRCUIT

Any electrical circuit that energizes signaling equipment.

EXTERNALLY OPERABLE

Capable of being operated without exposing the operator to contact with live parts.

GROUNDED (GROUNDING)

Connected (connecting) to ground or to a conductive body that extends the ground connection.

RAIN TIGHT

Constructed or protected so that exposure to a beating rain will not result in the entrance of water under specified test conditions.

WEATHERPROOF

Constructed or protected so that exposure to the weather will not interfere with successful operation.

WATERTIGHT

Constructed so that moisture will not enter the enclosure under specified test conditions.

RAINPROOF

Constructed, protected or treated so as to prevent rain from interfering with the successful operation of the apparatus under specified test conditions.

MANUFACTURED HOME INSTALLATION

Construction which is required for the installation of a manufactured home , including the construction of the foundation system, required structural connections thereto and the installation of on-site water, gas, electrical and sewer systems and connections thereto which are necessary for the normal operation of the manufactured home .

GUARDED

Covered, shielded, fenced, enclosed or otherwise protected by means of suitable covers, casings, barriers, rails, screens, mats or platforms to remove the likelihood of approach or contact by persons or objects to a point of danger.

LABELED

Equipment or materials to which has been attached a label, symbol or other identifying mark of an organization acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction and concerned with product evaluation that maintains periodic inspection of production of labeled equipment or materials and by whose labeling the manufacturer indicates compliance with appropriate standards or performance in a specified manner.

UTILIZATION EQUIPMENT

Equipment that utilizes electric energy for electronic, electromechanical, chemical, heating, lighting or similar purposes.

LISTED

Equipment, materials or services included in a list published by an organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction and concerned with evaluation of products or services, that maintains periodic inspection of production of listed equipment or materials or periodic evaluation of services, and whose listing states either that the equipment, material or services meets identified standards or has been tested and found suitable for a specified purpose.

VOLTAGE TO GROUND

For grounded circuits, the voltage between the given conductor and that point or conductor of the circuit that is grounded. For ungrounded circuits, the greatest voltage between the given conductor and any other conductor of the circuit

FOUNTAIN

Fountains, ornamental pools, display pools, and reflection pools. The definition does not include drinking fountains.

LOCATION, WET

Installations underground or in concrete slabs or masonry in direct contact with the earth and locations subject to saturation with water or other liquids, such as vehicle-washing areas, and locations exposed to weather.

GROUNDED, EFFECTIVELY

Intentionally connected to earth through a ground connection or connections of sufficiently low impedance and having sufficient current-carrying capacity to prevent the buildup of voltages that may result in undue hazards to connected equipment or to persons.

PREMISES WIRING (SYSTEM)

Interior and exterior wiring, including power, lighting, control and signal circuit wiring together with all of their associated hardware, fittings and wiring devices, both permanently and temporarily installed. This includes wiring from the service point or power source to the outlets and wiring from and including the power source to the outlets where there is no service point. Such wiring does not include wiring internal to appliances, luminaires, motors, controllers, and similar equipment.

LOCATION, DAMP

Location protected from weather and not subject to saturation with water or other liquids but subject to moderate degrees of moisture. Examples of such locations include partially protected locations under canopies, marquees, roofed open porches and like locations, and interior locations subject to moderate degrees of moisture, such as some basements, some barns and some cold-storage warehouses.

POOL

Manufactured or field-constructed equipment designed to contain water on a permanent or semipermanent basis and used for swimming, wading, immersion, or therapeutic purposes.

POOL COVER, ELECTRICALLY OPERATED

Motor-driven equipment designed to cover and uncover the water surface of a pool by means of a flexible sheet or rigid frame.

QUALIFIED PERSON

One who has the skills and knowledge related to the construction and operation of the electrical equipment and installations and has received safety training to recognize and avoid the hazards involved.

OVERLOAD

Operation of equipment in excess of normal, full-load rating, or of a conductor in excess of rated ampacity that, when it persists for a sufficient length of time, would cause damage or dangerous overheating. A fault, such as a short circuit or ground fault, is not an overload.

VENTILATED

Provided with a means to permit circulation of air sufficient to remove an excess of heat, fumes or vapors.

BUILDING SERVICE EQUIPMENT

Refers to the plumbing, mechanical and electrical equipment including piping, wiring, fixtures and other accessories which provide sanitation, lighting, heating ventilation, cooling, fire protection and facilities essential for the habitable occupancy of a manufactured home or accessory building or structure for its designated use and occupancy.

SERVICE CABLE

Service conductors made up in the form of a cable.

SERVICE POINT

Service point is the point of connection between the facilities of the serving utility and the premises wiring.

CLASS 2 CIRCUIT

That portion of the wiring system between the load side of a Class 2 power source and the connected equipment. Due to its power limitations, a Class 2 circuit considers safety from a fire initiation standpoint and provides acceptable protection from electric shock.

MANUFACTURED HOME STANDARDS

The Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards as promulgated by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

NEUTRAL POINT

The common point on a wye-connection in a polyphase system or midpoint on a single-phase, 3-wire system, or midpoint of a single-phase portion of a 3-phase delta system, or a midpoint of a 3-wire, direct-current system.

GROUNDING CONDUCTOR, EQUIPMENT (EGC)

The conductive path installed to connect normally noncurrent-carrying metal parts of equipment together and, to the system grounded conductor, the grounding electrode conductor or both.

NEUTRAL CONDUCTOR

The conductor connected to the neutral point of a system that is intended to carry current under normal conditions.

SERVICE

The conductors and equipment for delivering energy from the serving utility to the wiring system of the premises served.

SERVICE CONDUCTORS

The conductors from the service point to the service disconnecting means.

INTERRUPTING RATING

The highest current at rated voltage that a device is intended to interrupt under standard test conditions.

MAXIMUM WATER LEVEL

The highest level that water can reach before it spills out.

SERVICE EQUIPMENT

The necessary equipment, usually consisting of a circuit breaker(s) or switch(es) and fuse(s), and their accessories, connected to the load end of the service conductors to a building or other structure, or an otherwise designated area, and intended to constitute the main control and cutoff of the supply.

SERVICE DROP

The overhead service conductors from the last pole or other aerial support to and including the splices, if any, connecting to the service-entrance conductors at the building or other structure.

SERVICE-ENTRANCE CONDUCTORS, OVERHEAD SYSTEM

The service conductors between the terminals of the service equipment and a point usually outside the building, clear of building walls, where joined by tap or splice to the service drop.

SERVICE-ENTRANCE CONDUCTORS, UNDERGROUND SYSTEM

The service conductors between the terminals of the service equipment and the point of connection to the service lateral.

SERVICE LATERAL

The underground service conductors between the street main, including any risers at a pole or other structure or from transformers, and the first point of connection to the service-entrance conductors in a terminal box or meter or other enclosure, inside or outside the building wall. Where there is no terminal box, meter or other enclosure with adequate space, the point of connection shall be considered to be the point of entrance of the service conductors into the building.

PERMANENTLY INSTALLED SWIMMING, WADING, IMMERSION AND THERAPEUTIC POOLS

Those that are constructed in the ground or partially in the ground, and all others capable of holding water with a depth greater than 42 inches (1067 mm), and all pools installed inside of a building, regardless of water depth, whether or not served by electrical circuits of any nature.

STORABLE SWIMMING OR WADING POOL

Those that are constructed on or above the ground and are capable of holding water with a maximum depth of 42 inches (1067 mm), or a pool with nonmetallic, molded polymeric walls or inflatable fabric walls regardless of dimension.
