-Safety Data Sheets (SDS) -every chemical has one -includes all information about a chemical -general info, waste disposal, health issues -located in lab (in folders) -on google (type in chemical name+SDS) -ask your TA instructor
Rule #5: Lab Behavior
-clean up your mess and no eating in the lab, always dispose -no eating or drinking in lab(drinks can be kept out in the hallway) -makeup, lip balm, chewing gum not allowed -no bags at lab tables and keep and drawers and lockers closed -ONLY need lab manual, notebook, pencil/pen, calculator -no working alone in lab and cleanliness
balances: always record all decimal places,
-covers are used to reduce flow across balance -brushes for solid spills and paper towel for liquid spills -never place anything on pan (use weighing paper on pan)
Rule #1: Dress for lab
-long pants, closed toed shoes, safety glasses on pants/skirts must be down to the ankle, leggings are NOT pants for lab, shoes must cover the entire foot and you must wear socks, shirts must have some sleeve (but doesn't need to be long-sleeved), jackets can be worn -tshirt, jeans, sneakers -long hair needs to be tied back -need mask bc of COVOID
Rule #2: Personal Protective Equipment
-safety glasses on. proceed -goggles, ALWAYS wear them -gloves are not necessary but if worn pay attention to what you are touching -lab coats are not necessary
Rule #4: Safety equipment
-shower, eyewash station, fire extinguisher>used for a small fire, evacuate if bigger) in the hallway, pull pin and squeeze levers together -items used for prevention of accidents in lab -fume hoods (sash must be pulled down to the correct height) to allow for proper air flow -PPE -proper clothing items used when lab prevention measures fail: -safety shower -eyewash station -fire blanket: located in hallway just outside lab door -fire extinguisher, grab rope and hang on as you rotate in circle, lay down on floor and stop drop and roll -you will get additional medical help -first aid kit -spill kits -use safety shower if large amount gets on you, must take off all clothers, wash for 20 min

-sinks/cleanup stations -2 faucets, DI water, soap, paper towals, brushes, and no need of dry equipment

3 categories -regular trash -broken glass container -discard chemical waste in right containers -put chemical waste in log sheets
Rule #3: Always add your acid or base to the solvent

ovens
used to dry open doors the heat will come out quickly minimize time opening doors and wipe down handle and use paper towel as cover over your hand -ensure handle latches when closing
