Commutative Property of Addition

Changing the Order a+b = b+a

Commutative Property of Multiplication

Changing the Order ab = ba

(5,7)∪(4,10)

(4,10)

(5,7)∩(4,10)

(5,7)

4∈{4,5}

4 is a member of the set {4,5}

Inverse Property of Addition (Additive Inverse)

Adding a number and its opposite gives you zero. a+(-a) = (-a)+a = 0

Multiplicative Property of Zero

Any number times zero is equal to zero. a×0 = 0 or 0×a = 0

Distributive Property

Draw your arrows. Multiply across BOTH arrows. (So you multiply at least 2 times.) a(b+c) = ab + ac

Associative Property of Addition

Moving Parentheses - keep order the same (a+b)+c = a+(b+c)

Associative Property of Multiplication

Moving Parentheses - keep order the same (ab)c = a(bc)

Inverse Property of Multiplication (Multiplicative Inverse)

Multiplying a number and it's reciprocal gives you one. 2×½ = ½×2 = 1

Identity Property of Multiplication (Multiplicative Identity)

One is the multiplicative identity. Gives you back what you start with. a×1 = 1×a = a

{4}⊆{4,5}

The set containing 4 is a subset of the set {4,5}

Identity Property of Addition (Additive Identity)

Zero is the additive identity. Gives you back what you start with. a+0 = 0+a = a

{3,4,5}∪{5,6,7}

{3,4,5,6,7}

{3,4}∪{5,6}

{3,4,5,6}

{3,4,5}∩{5,6,7}

{5}

{3,4,5,6,7}∩∅
