Ratio

A comparison of two quantities by division

Constant of Proportionality

A constant rate of two variables related proportionally Quantity x is proportional (directly) to another quantity y, then is written as y=kx, where k is called the Constant of Proportionality.

Unit Rate

A rate in which the second quantity in the comparison is ONE unit

Rate of Change

A ratio that compares the amount of change in a dependent variable to the amount of change in an independent variable ; can be represented with the variables k or m.

Linear Relationship

A relationship between two quantities in which one variable changes by a constant amount as the other variable changes by a constant amount

Proportional Relationship

A relationship between two quantities in which the ratio of one quantity to the other is constant

Constant

A value that does not change

Independent Variable

A variable (often written as x) whose value does not affect or depend on that of another

Dependent Variable

A variable (often written as y ) whose value depends on that of another.

Proportion

An equation that states that two ratios are equivalent

b

Represents the constant value in a non-proportional relationship, the point where the line crosses the y-axis

m

Represents the rate of change in a non-proportional relationship

k

Represents the rate of change in a proportional relationship

Y= mx + b

The equation used for Non-proportional Relationships

Coefficient

The number that is multiplied by the variable in an algebraic expression

Origin

the point where the x-axis and the y-axis in the coordinate plane intersect: (0,0)
