Mercantilism + Navigation & Trade Acts
How were these acts enforced?
-Every colony lost the right to be a separate colony. -No legislature, gov, tax or laws. -Land claims are now illegal.
How did these laws impact the colonies?
It restricted free trade and the ability to make a good life. (No land, no money, no job.) This mostly benefited the southerners. But this hurt the north because of the diverse economy.
How did mercantilism affect the Colonies?
Americans provided raw goods to Britain, and Britain used the raw goods that were sold in European markets and back to the colonies. The colonies could not compete with Britain in manufacturing.
How did the colonists react?
Colonists asked for removal if they obey the acts. They agree but colonists go back to ignoring the acts.
3rd Navigation Act
Enumerated Goods. Any raw goods like tobacco grown in the colonies had to be sold to England.
What did the British do after they did not obey?
For 50 years the british didn't care, 1763 they needed money so they could put down more laws. This was part of the american movement for independence.
2nd Navigation Act
Imported items must go to England first. The reasons for this was money. They can know the number of imports. Taxes was another reason. This also takes trade out of foreigners hands.

In order to build strength, a nation must export more than it imports.
4th Navigation Act
Laws prohibiting manufacturing certain goods in colonies. Ex the woolen act. Sheep were grown and sheared in the colonies. But they were sent to England to make wool products. England had the tools necessary. This was so they could not compete.
Where did Britain get their resources?
The colonies would grow goods like cotton. This way Britain does not have to go to foreign countries like Egypt. Cotton will cost less than the shirt. Colonists are in an exploitive relationship with Britain.
What did the English do to support mercantilism?
The english passed laws exclusively benefiting the British economy.
What is the idea of Mercantilism?
The government regulates the economy to increase the power and wealth of state to become self-sufficient. The more the colonies export, the more wealth and power Britain has.
1st Navigation Act
Trade between England and England's colonies. It must occur on British/American owned ships. It must be manned by British/American sailors.
Did the colonies rebel?
Yes, the colonist evaded the Acts by smuggling.
