Identify any possible differences between Southern British and General American in the pronunciation of the following set: "So over the next five or six days, I told him whatever he wanted to know, and he'd lie there."

"S*o* *o*v*er* the next five *or* six days, I t*o*ld him *whatever* he w*a*nted to kn*ow*, and he'd lie th*ere*."

Compare RP and GA in the realization of the following chunk of discourse: "the power ofhaving rather too much her own way"

"the powe*r of* having r*a*th*er* too much he*r o*wn way"

There are two major phonological differences between RP and GA in the chunk of discourse provided. The first is a characteristic which allows to distinguish the varieties of English, i.e. rhoticity. RP is a non-rhotic reference accent in which /r/ is never pronounced in coda position (at the end of syllables) unless it is followed by a word starting with a vowel. We have an instance of non-rhoticity in "rather" realized as [ ˈr ɑ ː ðə], and two instances of linking /r/ in "power of" and "her own", respectively realized as [ ˈpa ʊ ər əv] and [ ər ˈəʊn]. GA, on the other hand, is a rhotic reference accent, which means that /r/ is pronounced in every position. We consequently have "rather", "power" and "her" respectively realized as [ˈræðər], [ˈpaʊər] and [ər]. The second phonological difference between RP and GA is vocalic and has to do with the vowel in DANCE words. In RP, it is always /ɑː/, whereas in GA it is always /æ/. Hence the difference in the pronunciation of the word "rather" ([ˈrɑːðə] in RP vs. [ˈræðər] in GA)

3. Discuss the differences between RP and GA in the realization of the word : "gratitude" (réponse rédigée)

There are two potential differences between RP and GA in the realisation of the word "gratitude": one is phonological, and the other is phonetic. The phonological difference is consonantal and is a phenomenon known as "yod dropping" in GA. Indeed, in GA, after a coronal consonant, such as /t/, the phoneme /j/ is dropped. Therefore, "gratitude" would be pronounced [ˈɡræɾɪtuːd] without the yod. On the contrary, in RP, the yod is maintained in such contexts: [ˈɡrætɪtjuːd]. The other potential difference between RP and GA in this word is phonetic and has to do with the realisation of the phoneme /t/. GA has a flapped or tapped allophone of /t/ in intervocalic position: [ˈɡræɾɪtuːd]. In RP, there are two possibilities: /t/ can be realised as [t] as in [ˈɡrætɪtjuːd], or, /t/ can be realised as a glottal stop ([ˈɡræʔɪtjuːd]).
