N95 RESPIRATOR MASK

- A respiratory protective device designed to achieve a very close facial fit and very efficient filtration of airborne particles. - Filters out at least 95% of airborne particles including large and small particles - edges of the respirator are designed to form a seal around the nose and mouth. - When properly fitted and donned, minimal leakage occurs around edges when user inhales

GLOVES

- It is important to select the right size to provide proper protection from the infectious agents. - if they become torn or heavily contaminated during use, change them - are not a substitute for hand hygiene.

MASKS

- There are several types of masks to prevent the spread of infectious disease. - They vary in shape (rectangular, round)) and method of securing (elastic bands, ties) - are not respirators. They do not protect you from airborne transmitted diseases, just droplet transmitted disease.

if worn properly, a surgical mask can

- meant to help block large-particle droplets, splashes, sprays, or splatter that may contain germs, keeping it from reaching your mouth and nose - may help reduce exposure of your saliva and respiratory secretions to others

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

- precautionary step to protect yourself and the people around you. - specialized clothing or equipment worn for protection against dangerous or infectious materials. - prevents contact with an infectious agent by creating a barrier between the potentially infectious material and the public health practitioner.

GOGGLES or FACE SHIELDS

- protect the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth during situations where blood, body fluid, secretions, or excretions may splash or spray. - cover the top, front, and sides of the eye area, providing the proper protection from splashes and sprays that eyeglasses do not

RESPIRATORS

- vary in size, shape (oval or round), and level of respiratory protection offered. - must be fit-tested before use to ensure they fit properly - must have a mask-to-face seal and must be checked annually to make sure they are providing adequate protection. - straps should be placed on crown of head (top strap) and base of neck (bottom strap).

DONNING OF PPE

1. Identify and gather the proper PPE to don. 2. Perform hand hygiene using 70% alcohol or hand sanitizer. 3. Put on isolation gown. 4. Put on NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher (use a facemask if a respirator is not available). 5. Put on face shield or goggles. 6. Put on gloves.

DOFFING/REMOVAL OF PPE

1. Remove gloves 2. Remove gown 3. Healthcare personnel may now exit patient room. 4. Perform hand hygiene. 5. Remove face shield or goggles. 6. Remove and discard respirator (or facemask if used instead of respirator). 7. Perform hand hygiene after removing the respirator/facemask and before putting it on again if your workplace is practicing reuse.

• Gown, aprons, coveralls • Shoe covers • Hair covers • Respirators/masks • Goggles or face shields • Gloves

APPROPRIATE PPE FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS

95%

An N95 respirator mask filters out at least _____ of airborne particles including large and small particles

remove gloves, remove gown, exit patient room, perform hand hygiene, remove faceshield/gloves, remove and discard face mask, perform hand hygiene after removing

DOFFING/REMOVAL OF PPE SEQUENCE

• Stop the spread of illness/infection • Protect their health • Protect their client's health • Protect their family's health • Protect the community's health

PURPOSE OF PPE

eyeglasses

do not provide an adequate level of protection in the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth

Fit-testing

is the procedure used to check for a correct mask-to-face seal and involves testing to ensure there is no air leakage between the mask and the face.

transmission protection

not fit-testing respirators only reduces risk of ______, and cannot protect you from airborne diseases.

gather proper PPE, perform hand hygiene, put on isolation gown, put on face mask, put on faceshield/goggles, put on gloves

WHEN TO WEAR LABORATORY GOWNS OR DISPOSABLE PLASTIC APRONS

• Every laboratory activity or procedure • If your clothing will be soiled with body substances • When procedures generate splashes of blood or body fluids • When cleaning and decontaminating spills of blood or other body fluids

WHEN TO WEAR GLOVES

• performing any laboratory activities or procedures • touching a patient's blood or body fluids, mucous membranes or skin that is not intact • handling items and surfaces contaminated with blood and body fluids • performing venipuncture or other vascular intervention • handling and processing all specimens of blood and body fluids • cleaning and decontaminating spills of blood and other body fluids • disposing of bulk blood supplies used in the body fluid procedures

SURGICAL MASK

- A loose-fitting, disposable device that creates a physical barrier between the mouth and nose of the wearer and potential contaminants in the immediate environment - do not provide complete protection from germs and other contaminants - Not intended to be used more than once

WHEN TO USE GOGGLES AND PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR

• Every laboratory activity or procedure • When performing procedures that are likely to generate droplets of blood or body fluids, and strong chemicals • When performing laboratory procedures that have a high potential for generating droplets

LABORATORY GOWN

• When used in the laboratory, lab coats protect against accidental spills • Usually has long sleeves and are made of absorbent material, such as cotton, to protect user from chemical spills • Some have buttons or elastic at the end of the sleeves, to secure them around the wrists
