Primary Navigation
Drives access to the app's core features. * Organizes the content that users are most interested in by major headings and labels. Usually placed in most visable place above fold. Top of interface below header and logo.
Personalization
Occurs when a company knows enough about a customer's likes and dislikes that it can fashion offers more likely to appeal to that person *Uses previous actions to predict your interests. Questionnaires . Collects data off of previous clicks, sites visited. Recent searches or purchases.
Accessibility
Fund. principal of user interface. Make sure users with disabilities can access content. Helps those with tech. constraints. as well.
Checkbox
Lets users select multiple options even all of them.
Augmented Reality (AR)
Superimosing the computer generated text, graphics, audio, GPS, data, and other sensory elements atop your view of the real-world environment in real-time.
Learnability
The extent to which a user can operate a product or system at a defined level of competence after a predetermined period of training. *How fast a user can accomplish the basic tasks on an interface they have never used before.
touch interface
The primary user interface on modern mobile devices where keys are replaced with tactile interaction. Uses touch screens ass combined input/ output devices. Let users directly interact with what is displayed onscreen using one or more fingers. Or a stylus.
Agency
User said to have more agency when they can contribute to creating media content.
form
Enter information and get feedback. Online like to put in a job application. can help users fill in blanks with autofill, prompt prefills, and tabbing.
User Interface (UI)
The "User Interface" or UI of an app refers to how a person (user) interacts with the computer or app. *System that supports human-machine interaction or human- computer interaction. Focuses on elements of interface that users interact with like physical and technical features as well as visual components.
text field
A database field that can hold any combination of alphanumeric data (letters or numbers) and is most often used to hold text. Let users typed in what they want.
Tab Menu
A menu system similar to labeling folders and organizing them in a file cabinet. Virtual tabs give users access to different content modules or sections within a multimedia site or database. *Provides access to different content modules or sections. Provide easy wat to show large amount of information by category.
Cosmetic Customization
A set of features that allow the user to personalize the visual presentation of an interface without affecting its function (e.g. creating personal avatars on the Wii). Lets you control presentation like: Background, color, font, layout, graphics and profile photo.
Fat Footer
A vertically expanded footer at the bottom of the page containing additional internal and external links. *Gives user the option to visit related pages using redundant links embedded in the footer, Provides continuous access to shortcuts to highly used sections as well as major functions.
above the fold
All important text and images should be placed "above the fold" so users don't have to scroll down a page or a screen to get to it. Extending this concept, the bottom of page/screen becomes part with least important content.
Parallax website
Called parallax scrolling. Background of site moves at slower speed than the foreground elements on the page to create a faux 3D visual effect. Majority created by JavaScript or CSS. Provide great opportunities to encourage online story telling by guiding you through the site in linear manner.
Breadcrumb
Can prevent users from getting lost in an interface. From Hansel and Gretel. Used for complicated interfaces with hierarchically arranged layers. Putting breadcrumbs in your interface gives users a way to track their paths and go back up another level in the hierarchy. Typically right below navigation menus. Plain. Little impact on users processing of interface. Good way to invite first time users to further explore interface.
Responsive Web Design
Refers to using existing techniques involving flexible grid layout, flexible images, and media and media queries into a unified approach to web design. * New trend. Refers to the practice of building a website that works for every device with optimal display regardless of screen size.
Web User Interface (WUI)
The interaction between a user and software running on a Web server. The user interface is the Web browser and the Web page it downloaded and rendered. See Web application and Web server. Or, a programming connection to the Web.
Dropdown menu
a box that has an arrow to the right; clicking on the arrow will drop down a list of options * Access subsections from a list that drops down below that main item
Media Stickiness
a small niche audience engages content for a longer period of time* Stickiness is anything about a Web site that encourages a visitor to stay longer. A Website is sticky if a visitor tends to stay for a long time and to return. If you have agency it can boost this and better engage users with the interface.
Radio Button
a type of graphical user interface element that allows the user to choose only one of a predefined set of options. *Let users chose among mutually exclusive options.
Efficiency
how fast a user can perform tasks after learning how to use the interface.
secondary navigation
list of subsections in the current section or additional options. Organizes the content that is less often visited by users.
tailoring
the capacity to aim media content and ads at particular individuals *Many interfaces now adapt to individual users giving people tailored experiences. Either personalization or customization.
data mining
the process of analyzing data to extract information not offered by the raw data alone
menu
A list of commands or choices. Most common navigational tool used in graphical user interfaces
Motion Tracking Interface
A type of graphical user interface that directly monitors and responds to users' body movements. Natural graphical user interfaces that directly monitor and respond to users' body movements.
Voice interface
An interface which uses voice commands to operate. Voice/speech interaction.
Collaborative Filtering (CF)
Examines both your profile and the action you are taking, then bases feedback on what similar people who took same action did.
multi-touch navigation
Input device able to recognise touches and gestures made with multiple fingers.
Clickstream
Record of your clicks to help anticipate action.
dropdown list
A list that drops down with additional options when a particular menu item is selected. let users choose among mutually exclusive options.
Graphical User Interface (GUI)
A visual display on a computer's screen that allows you to interact with your computer more easily by clicking graphical elements. *Include elements of windows, icons, menus, buttons, and scrolling bars.
Archives
Only appropriate for info that spans a rather long period of time and that users can logically browse chronologically by date. Like pagination.
Carousel
Organize items on a horizontal line. Carousel shows only a few items, as thumbnails, at a time.
accordition
Special form of menu w/ vertically or horizontally stacked list of sections. Each section has a headline and a panel associated with it.
Usability
The degree to which a system is easy to learn and efficient and satisfying to use. * Measure of people's experience with a user interface.
Pagination
The system used for numbering pages in a document. In Word, it also means using features to control the way paragraphs and lines break at the top and bottom of a page. *Large set of organized information. You have to break the info. down to be displayed on separate pages. Gives users a brief idea about how much info to anticipate. Also allows users to easily navigate through the parts of a larger body of info.
Thumbnail
A small illustration in a dialog box or panel displayed to help you choose an option. *Reduced size version of a larger image. Illustrate any visual item.
Footer
Add links to frequently used sections of site, RSS feeds, social media sites, recent updates, or sign up forms.
Interactivity
is the ability of the user to interact with an application. One of defining characteristics of multimedia interfaces. *Reciprocal communication between the media and the users facilitated by various technology features. User and media communicated with one another. implies interaction and activity.
Functional Customization
A set of features that allow the user to change the functionality of an interface.
Input Prompt
A feature whereby the browser or program automatically prefills a text field with a prompt, providing the user with an example of what to type. *Prefill a text field with a prompt telling you what to type.
Gestures
Gesture recognition is a topic in computer science and language technology with the goal of interpreting human gestures via mathematical algorithms. Gestures can originate from any bodily motion or state but commonly originate from the face or hand.
