A contract that defines terms of future contracts.

MLA (master license agreement)

A contract that grants a license from a creator, developer, or producer, such as a software producer, to a third party for the purposes of marketing, sublicensing, or distributing the product to consumers as a stand-alone product or as part of another product.

patch

A correction, improvement, or enhancement to part of a software application, often distributed at no charge by software vendors to fix a bug in their code or to add slightly more functionality.

VoIP PBX (Private Branch Exchange)

A dedicated telephone switch or a virtual switching device that connects and manages calls within a private organization, and manages call connections that exit the network through a VoIP gateway

(SOW) statement of work

A detailed textual description of tasks to be performed (scope of the project) for purposes of establishing a price and schedule quote to a customer.

demarc (demarcation point)

A device that marks the dividing line of responsibility for the functioning of a network between internal users and upstream service providers.

MOU (memorandum of understanding)

A document presenting the intentions of two or more parties to enter into a binding agreement, or contract. The MOU is usually not a legally binding document (although there are exceptions), does not grant extensive rights to either party, provides no legal recourse, and is not intended to provide a thorough coverage of the agreement to come.

RFP (Request for Proposal)

A document that is sent out to potential vendors requesting them to provide a proposal on a product or service.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride)

A flexible rubber-like plastic used to surround some twisted pair cabling.

IDF (intermediate distribution frame)

A junction point between the MDF and end user equipment. The TIA/EIA standard specifies at least one IDF per floor

19. For what time period should you schedule a network change?

A network change should be completed during off-hours where everyone must be informed of and agree to this maintenance window in advance.

Nmap

A network-vulnerability scanner.

9. Which of these is considered a secure place to store a list of documented network passwords?

A password manager

EIA (Electronic Industries Alliance)

A trade association accredited by ANSI to develop and jointly issue standards for telecommunications and electronics.

UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair)

A type of cabling that consists of one or more insulated wire pairs encased in a plastic sheath. It does not contain additional shielding for the twisted pairs.

STP (shielded twisted pair)

A type of copper-based cable containing twisted-pair wires that are not only individually insulated, but are also surrounded by a shielding made of a metallic substance such as foil.

EMI (electromagnetic interference)

A type of interference that may be caused by motors, power lines, televisions, copiers, fluorescent lights, or other sources of electrical activity.

Patch Panel

A wall-mounted panel of data receptors into which cross-connect patch cables from the punch-down block are inserted.

Inventory Management

Developing and maintaining adequate assortments of products to create a network

1. A technician from your ISP has arrived to help you troubleshoot a weak WAN connection. To what location do you take her?

Entrance facility

18. List some good names for devices on your home network or on the network in your school's lab. Demonstrate the use of best practices when creating a naming scheme for devices on a computer network.

Example: RCPHS35218: - RC - campus, PHS - building, 352 - room number, # - numbering scheme

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)

IP Telephony, the use of any network to carry voice signals using TCP/IP protocols

20. In a large organization, how do you typically request permission to perform a network change?

In a large organization, when requesting a network change you may want to first submit a change request document, then understand and follow the approval process, have the change project-managed, provide additional documentation, and close the change.

10. What is the first step of inventory management?

List all components on the network.

2. A transceiver was recently damaged by a lightning strike during a storm. How might you decide whether the ISP is responsible for replacing this device, or whether your company must foot the bill?

Look at whether the device is located on the ISP's side of the demarc.

11. There is only one __________ per network, but there can be many __________ connecting internal portions of the network.

MDF; IDFs

15. Why is it important to minimize cable clutter in a rack?

Minimizing cable clutter can help prevent airflow blockages

16. What are some elements that are typically included in network diagrams?

Network diagrams may show physical layout, logical topology, IP address reserves, names of major network devices, and types of transmission data.

6. You need to connect a new network printer to a nearby wall jack. What kind of cable should you use?

Patch cable

5. If you're shopping for a rack switch, what component on the switch tells you it can be mounted to a rack?

Rack Ears

14. What is the unit of measurement that defines the space available in a rack?

Rack Unit (RU)

rollback

Reverses changes

3. Which of the following devices are you likely to find in the MDF? Choose all that apply.

Routers, Switches, and the KMV Switch

Plenum

The area above the ceiling tile or below the subfloor in a building.

VoIP Gateway

The device that converts an analog telephone call (voice and signals) into data packets (and vice versa) for traversal over an IP-based network.

entrance facility

The location where an incoming network service (whether phone, Internet, or long-distance service) enters a building and connects with the building's backbone cabling.

12. Why is it important to use a structured cabling standard when installing and managing cabling systems?

The structured cabling standard describes the best way to maximize performance and minimize upkeep.

17. How can you go about gathering the information needed to assemble a thorough operations manual?

Visits to data rooms, an examination of servers and desktops, a review of receipts for software and hardware purchases, and the use of a protocol analyzer or network management software package

4. Which device converts signals from a campus's analog phone equipment into IP data that can travel over the Internet?

VoIP Gateway

crosstalk interference

When one pair in a UTP cord interferes with signals in other pairs

8. What type of diagram shows a graphical representation of a network's wired infrastructure?

Wiring schematic

7. You've decided to run an Nmap scan on your network. What app could you open to perform this task? Choose all that apply.

Zenmap, Command Prompt, and Powershell

fiber-optic cable

a form of cable that contains one or several glass fibers in its core and comes in two types: single-mode fiber, and multimode fiber

network diagrams

graphical representations of a networks devices and connections

upgrade

major change to a software package that enhances the functionality and features of the software

MDF (Main Distribution Facility)

the centralized point of interconnection for an organization's LAN or WAN -- the racks holding the network equipment or room of racks and equipment

System Life Cycle

the process of designing, implementing, and maintaining an entire network

Patch Management

the process of regularly applying patches and updates to software

Rack Diagrams

these show the devices stacked in a rack system and are typically drawn to scale; helpful when planning a rack installation

TIA (Telecommunications Industry Association)

Along with EIA, developed the 568 Commercial Building Telecommunication Cabling standard.

SLA (Service Level Agreement)

An agreement entered into by the transmitter, ISP and the receiver, subscriber.

13. Why is it important to use plenum-rated cabling in the area above the ceiling tile?

Because it is coated with a flame-resistant jacket that produces less smoke when on fire
