Restraint

A physical or chemical way to restrict voluntary movement or behavior

Physical Restraint

Any physical or mechanical device, material or equipment, that RESTRICTS a person's freedom of movement or normal access to one's body

Seat Belt

a physical restraint that limits arm movement

Pelvic Support

a physical restraint used between the thighs to keep a resident's hips from slipping forward

Soft Limb Ties

a physical restraint used to keep a limb immobilized

Soft Cloth Mittens

a physical restraint using a mitt that limits mobility of hands and use of fingers, frequently used for residents who could harm themselves by pulling at tubing, removing dressings, touching incisions or scratching a wound

Restraint-free Care

an environment in which restraints are not kept or used for any reason

Chemical Restraint

any drug used to control actions of a resident for CONVENIENCE of the staff

Restraint Alternative

measures used instead of physical or chemical restraints

Sleep disorders, Stress and anxiety, Severe Injury, Weakness and muscle atrophy

Criteria for Appropriate Use of Physical Restraints(TECM)

Temporary, Evidence of less restrictive measures were ineffective, Consent by resident or legal representative, Medically justified with a medical order

Freedom of Restraints

The resident has the right to be free from any restraints imposed for purposes of discipline or convenience, and not required to treat the resident's medical symptoms

Nurse Aide's Role(O, P=3)

Offer back rubs, snacks, drinks and reading materials or read to them, Place resident near nursing station, Promote restful sleep

Negative Effects of Restraints(P,R=5)

Pneumonia, Pressure Ulcers, Poor blood circulation, Poor appetite and malnutrition, Risk of suffocation

Doctors order or as directed by a nurse
