Observational Learning-Psyc1101
Imitation
"Monkey see, monkey do" motto
Verbal
does not perform...INSTEAD describes or explains the behavior (Ex: coach gives a player instructions)
Vicarious Reinforcement
process where the observer sees the model punished, making the observer less likely to imitate the model's behavior.
Observational Learning
type of learning that occurs by WATCHING OTHERS
Prosocial Models
(positive models) encourage socially acceptable behavior (Ex: if you want your kids to read...then read to them)
Albert Bandura
-social learning theory -believes that pure behaviorism could NOT explain why learning can take place in the absence of external reinforcement. -felt that internal mental states must also have a role in learning - felt observational learning involves much more than imitation
Bandura's 3 kinds of models...
1. Live 2. Verbal 3. Symbolic
According to Lefrançois...there are several ways that observational learning can occur:
1. You learn a new response Ex: boss chews out friend for being late to work now you leave your house early to get to work on time after seeing your friend get in trouble. 2. You choose whether or not to imitate the model depending on what your saw happen to the model. Ex: mom enjoys wearing high heels so you put them on 3.You learn a general rule that you can apply to other situations.
Steps in Modeling Process...
1st: be focused on what model is doing 2nd: you must retain/remember what you observed(retention) 3rd: must be able to perform behavior and commit to memory (reproduction) 4th: motivation
Bandura Bobo Experiment
children's behavior influenced by whether the person was beating the Bobo doll or treating Bobo doll nicely
Live
demonstrates in person (Ex: doing laundry for the first time)
Symbolic
learning through fictional characters or people who demonstrate behaviors in books, movies, TV, shows, video games, or internet sources (Ex: Harry Potter)
Antisocial Effects
observational learning (Ex: abused children will more likely become abusers because of past experience)
Models
someone who performs a behavior and serves as an EXAMPLE (in observational learning).
