The Olympic torch is a symbol of peace, friendship, tolerance and hope. 1936 - First relay: Berlin Summer Olympic Games of 1936 was the first torch relay. All summer relays have begun in Olympia, Greece. How it was first lit: On July 20, 1936 the searing rays of the midday sun, concentrated by a parabolic mirror, kindles the Olympic flame. The torch is still lit by the purity of the Suns rays Conceived by: Dr. Carl Diem [not a member of the Nazi Party] from (Nazi) Germany conceived the modern Torch Relay inspired by Ancient Greek drawings and the writings of Plutarch. Enveloped by ancient ruins and a dozen women dressed in virginal white tunics, shirtless Greek runner Konstantinos Kondylis dipped a torch into a burning cauldron, held the fire aloft in his right hand and jogged the first steps of what would an epic 12-day, more than 2,000 miles, overland relay to Berlin. (Pageantry appeared to reprise a sacred Ancient Greek tradition, but was actually a piece of modern political theater carefully scripted and paid for entirely by Nazi Germany. In the propaganda film released in 1938 a German runner was filmed in Berlin to represent the first runner to lite the torch in place of the Greek runner Kondylis. Greeks employed a ritual fire in the ancient Olympics, but never staged a relay of torchbearers to open the games 1952 - Winter first: Olympic Torch relay took place during the Winter Games in 1952 in Morgedal, Norway 1964 - Winter Olympia: since the 1964 Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck, the torch relay has commenced in Olympia 2013 - space: the unlit Olympic Torch was taken into space for the first time on November 9th, 2013; it has been taken to space 3 times Lake: Two weeks after the torch went to space in 2013 it was taken 13 Meters down in Lake Baykal, Russia, the deepest lake in the world Lit - currently the torch is lit by the purity of the Suns rays 1994 - Tallest: Lillehammer - the tallest ever torch @ 152 cm 2018 - bearers: 7,500 torchbearers carried the torch in Pyongchang, China
