Writing Style: A lot of Neruda's work was not just poetry, but also political poetry and could be considered to be propaganda. Still, Neruda also has poems about love and nature, which are critically acclaimed.

Writing Style: Neruda has a range of quality in his poem, from blatantly communist propaganda pieces to beautiful poems that are considered masterpieces by many.

Contemporary Literary Criticism Vol. 2

I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You: This is one of Neruda's typical love poems. In the poem Neruda has a complex relationship with a woman and wants to hate her, though he loves her and can't not love her. He claims his love is unavoidable and that though he won't be able to be with her he can't love another woman. Neruda also employs symbolism with the fire representing passion and he laces many lines with assonance

Ode to Tomatoes: Straight from the beginning, it is easy to tell that Pablo Neruda is taking an object such as a tomato and really personifying it. Pablo Neruda writes about how the tomato blends well with other vegetables in the greater salad. The short sentence structure is deliberate in that it helps with the showing of the meaning of the tomato in the given action. In the beginning the light is compared to a half tomato and from there more aspects are compared to tomatoes such as the streets. Neruda really personifies the tomato in that Neruda describes the cutting of a tomato as murder. Showing that the tomato symbolizes more than just an inanimate vegetable/fruit. Neruda brings in some Chilean culture in describing how the vendors are overflowing with tomatoes at this time and that tomatoes populate the salads in chile, coupled with onions and oil. Neruda also implicitly hints at some political issues in much of his poetry, so this murder of the tomato could be a hint into some political unrest in Chile.

Your Laughter: First of all, Neruda uses sea metaphors to signify happiness and passion. Similes are used too; laughter is like a sword in aiding Neruda in a battle. Neruda also makes use of extended metaphor in this poem. The laughter could represent the laughter of the Chilean people rather than a single person. The poem was written during the communist ban in Chile, so the poem's hints at political content seem to make more sense and the poem's meaning is less vague than you'd initially think.

Timeline: 1923 Neruda publishes his first book, Crepusculario. The poems reflect longing and dissatisfaction, perhaps reflective of his rainy and dreary environment in Chile.

Writing Style 2: Even though Pablo Neruda, has works that are similar to the works of other poets, he has a style that makes him unique. He not only used poetry to entertain others and to illustrate his feelings for things; he used it in a way to personify some of the political issues during his time. His intertwining of imagery and symbolism and political events during his time, really sets him apart from any other poet and his political ideals (communism) definitely can add to this uniqueness as well.
