What are imperfect flowers?

A flower that has only male reproductive organs or only female reproductive organs

Internode

A segment of a plant stem between the points where leaves are attached.

Auxiliary Bud

A structure that has the potential to form a lateral shoot, or branch. The bud appears in the angle formed between a leaf and a stem.

Root

An organ in vascular plants that anchors the plant and enables it to absorb water and minerals from the soil.

A stamen is made up of the ??

Anther and filament

What are complete flowers?

Flowers with a stamen, pistil, petals and sepals

Tap Root

Large root that grows straight down in the ground

What two names are the female reproductive organ of the flower called?

Pistil and Carpal or ovary

What is the purpose of the Ovary?

Produces Ovules

What is the name of the male reproductive organ of the flower?

Stamen

Leaf

The major sites of photosynthesis in most plants.

Flower

The reproductive structure of an angiosperm

Petiole

The stalk of a leaf, which joins the leaf to a node of the stem.

What is the purpose of the Stigma?

To receive pollen

Ovary

a female reproductive organ in plants that produces ovules, at the base of the pistil

Root Cap

a structure that covers the tip of a root, protecting the root from injury

Lateral Shoot

an offshoot of the stem of the plant; fancy name for branch

Terminal Bud

bud at tip of a stem responsible for terminal growth

What are angiosperms?

flowering plants-the flower is the reproductive unit of some plants

What are incomplete flowers?

flowers that are missing one part of a flower: a stamen, a pistil, a petal, or sepal

What is the filament's job?

holds up the anther

Stamen

male parts of the flower, made of the anther and filament

What does pollen do?

male reproductive cells that fertilize the ovules or eggs

What are perfect flowers?

one flower with both a male and female reproductive organs

Petal

one of the leafy structures that comprise a flower, often brightly colored and have many different shapes

Style

part of the pistil, a long tube on top of the ovary and below the stigma

Stigma, Style and Ovary

parts of the pistil

Explain the pollination process

pollen must fertilize an ovule to produce a seed. This process is called fertilization. Animals, like bees, aid in pollination by getting pollen on them as they fly from flower to flower. They drop some pollen on the stigma. After the pollen grains land on the stigma during fertilization, pollen tubes develop within the style, burrowing down to the ovary. The pollen, or sperm, fertilizes an ovule, or egg. After fertilization, the ovule developed into a seed in the ovary.

What is the purpose of the Anther?

produces pollen

What are Ovules, or eggs?

reproductive cell that will become the seed after it is fertilized by the pollen

Ovule

reproductive cell which will become the seed when fertilized by the pollen

Gymnosperms

seed plant that bears its seeds directly on the surfaces of cones

Stem (peduncle)

supports the plant

Pistil

the female part of the flower, made of the stigma, style and ovary

Filament

the part of the flower that holds that anther, part of the stamen Number five

Sepal

the sepals are small leaves located directly under a flower outermost part of a flower

Anther

the tip of a flower's stamen, it contains the pollen

Phloem

the vascular tissue in plants that conducts sugars and other metabolic products downward from the leaves.

Stigma

uppermost part of the pistil, receives the male pollen grains during fertilization

Xylem

vascular tissue that carries water upward from the roots to every part of a plant
