Persuasive Speech Problem/Solution

"Now this might seem like an overwhelming issue that doesn't seem to have an easy answer. However, one solution is for the [State of Texas] to [require state programs for food and meal vouchers in accredited colleges and universities] S: As Nicholas Freudenberg who works with the CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute and colleagues notes... "Meal vouchers free or reduced meals for students and are funded through the college itself, donations by campus food vendors, or other students unused meal-plans"
Body: Address Need or Problem P.2
And that's not the only evidence there is of this issue ... S: Between 2007 to 2017, The College and University Food Bank Alliance (CUFBA).... Reported a growth from one campus food pantry to 450 food pantries!! So not only can food insecurity be evidenced by an increase in financial challenge but now there is notable PHYSICAL need in the rise of food locations. This is happening all over the US, even in our own Fort Worth community.

By implementing this solution, we can expect to see an increase in the number of students who are able to afford meals despite their backgrounds or current needs. -This option would specifically go to helping students who may not be able to help themselves. -It will offer a solution to "would be" wasted dollars from unused meal plans -It will initiate a community support system that involves small businesses and vendors. Now as you can see this system relies on the support of various groups, some of which you may find yourself a part of. Even if we are not included in this system, the funding and community support is still needed to make it a success.
Introduction: Hook
Imagine if you could determine if the college student sitting next to you was food insecure just by taking a glimpse into their life. Well let's try it. I'll give you three imaginary scenarios with three friends named Daniel, Fred, and Amy. Daniel is an avid sports competitor and when he's not at a game... Fred is involved in debate club and student govt and is always... And Amy loves to write for the school newspaper and is active in theater... So, did you catch it? Which student do you think is suffering from food insecurity? What if I told you the answer is all 3? That's right at some point all of them didn't have basic and reliable access to food sources.
Introduction: Build Credibility/Preview Labels (Intro)
In my 3 months of research into 6 peer reviewed articles about food insecurity in the United States, I have seen several alarming connections to our focus today Now to narrow down the focus we'll take a journey into the past and then look to present statistics on US college campuses. First let's look into the past...

Meal vouchers act as a positive way to break away from the "broke college student" mentality and offer a real solution to students struggling with reliable access to food sources. But don't just take my word for it... S: Swipe Out Hunger, a national organization, reports supplying 1.7 million meals through vouchers since its creation in 2010.

Now many of you may know food insecurity is an issue but did you know that ... S: "According to the US Department of Agriculture in 2015> "food insecurity among college students was higher than the national average of 12.7%"?
Body: Address Need or Problem P.1
S: In 1996, a study done by the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that 28% of households were at or below 130% of the federal poverty line. In 2016, however this level increased to 39%! This demonstrates a clear increase in the financial challenges that many college students now face and how that contributes to the growing need for food access.
Conclusion
So, we've been talking about the problem of food insecurity on college campuses and how the issue has changed over time. Additionally, I have shared the solution of a meal voucher system. My goal was to help everyone see the greater impact that the meal voucher system could have on reducing student food insecurity. And truly I hope to have reminded you that food insecurity can take on a variety of faces and situations just like (our friends) Daniel, Fred, and Amy So maybe you weren't aware of the challenges that so many students like them face BUT by voting to implement these requirements we can bring about lasting change that will positively affect future generations and make sure no student goes hungry!
