Robert Boyle

(1627 - 1691) English scientist and philosopher, one of the first people to determine air has matter. His air experiments changed how scientist made discoveries.

temperature

A measure of how hot or cold something is.

mass

A measure of the amount of matter in an object

chemist

A person engaged in chemical research or experiments.

element

A pure substance made of only one kind of atom

solid

A state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume

liquid

A state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape.

gas

A state of matter with no definite shape or volume

Boyle's Law

A statement that describes the relationship between the pressure and volume of a gas at constant temperature

scientific law

A statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time as the outcome of an experiment

Compound

A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds

volume

Amount of space occupied by an object

matter

Anything that has mass and takes up space

Titan

Saturn's largest moon

melting

The change in state from a solid to a liquid

condensation

The change of state from a gas to a liquid

evaporation

The change of state from a liquid to a gas

heat

The energy transferred between objects that are at different temperatures

Chemistry

The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes

thermal energy

The total energy of motion in the particles of a substance

freedom of movement

The way molecules in a substance move around relative to each other

Robert Hooke

Worked with Robert Boyle performing many types of experiments to learn about air.

molecule

a group of atoms joined together in a particular way

phase

a noticeably different form or state of the same substance

molecular attraction

a pull between two molecules that is always the same for a substance

Saturn

second-largest and sixth planet from the Sun; has a complex ring system, at least 31 moons, and a thick atmosphere made mostly of hydrogen and helium

Atoms

smallest unit of matter

pressure

the amount of continuous force that one object puts on another object while they are touching

Freezing

the change of state from a liquid to a solid

kinetic energy
