rheumatic fever

- a bacterial infection that can be carried in the blood to the joints - immune system attacks the heart - common among teens and any age group - can become permanent overtime

Lymphoma

- cancer of the lymph nodes - begins in infection fighting cells of the immune system (lymphocytes) - lymphocytes change and grow out of control

Leukemia

- cancer of white blood cells - cancer of blood and bone marrow - abnormal production of white blood cells

Malignant cancer

- cancerous - cancer that spreads around the body - tumor can spread and destroy nearby tissues - breast, uterus, prostate, colon, lung, stomach, intestine, rectum cancer

angina pectoris

- condition of hardening of the arteries - restricts blood flow to organs and tissues - proper diet and exercise

- connective or supportive cancer - bones, muscles, fats, cartilages, tissues

coronary heart disease

- develops when coronary arteries become narrow - coronary arteries (supply oxygen and blood to the blood) - CHD tends to develop when chloesterol builds up on the artery walls, creating plaques. - major risk factors: smoking, diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, age, physical inactivity

congestive heart failure

- heart is unable to pump its required amount of blood - affects the pumping power of the heart muscles - reduce intake of salt

Effects of poor dietary habit

- intake of low fiber, high fat, high salt, high sugar food - affect the amount of essential nutrients in the body (vitamins, minerals, protein, fober and fluid) - overconsumtion leads to diseases (obesity, early death, high blood pressure, makes teeth dirty, high cholesterol, certain type of cancer, depression, eating disorder, heart disease)

heart rhythm abnormalities

- irregular heart rhythm that leads to heart failure

Carcinoma

- major category of cancer - most common tyoe and most dangerous - malignant and spreads to other body parts

Benign cancer

- not cancerous - increase in size but does not invade other body parts

heart attack

- occurs when the flow of blood to the heart is blocked - blockage is most often a buildup of fat, cholesterol and other substances which form a plaque in the arteries that feed the heart (coronary arteries)

Variety

- principle of good nutrition - consumption of different types of food products

Balance

- principle of good nutrition - correct combination of nutrients (what do we eat? did we use the food pyramid? is it balanced?)

Adequacy

- principle of good nutrition - moderate amount of nutrients to maintain normal body function

- the usual choices of food that people make - occurs when a person does not follow the principles of good nutrition- adequacy, balance, variety - not eating enough health foods

Sedentary lifestyle

- when an individual is inactive from physical activities - leading risk factor of death (WHO) - increases risk of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, high blood preassure, cholesterol levels
