MANDIBULAR SUTURE

- A stitch used to hold the mouth closed; behind the lips, one part is passed through around the inferior jaw median plane, while the other part extends through the nasal septum or the superior frenulum. Method of mouth closure in which a suture is passed through the Septum of the nose and around the mandible.'

HYDROPERICARDIUM

- Abnormal accumulation of fluid within the pericardial sac.'

HYDROCELE

- Abnormal accumulation of fluids in a saclike structure in any sacculated cavity in the body, especially the scrotal sac.'

FORAMEN MAGNUM

- An opening in the occipital bone through which the spinal cord passes from the brain. A wooden dowel is inserted into the foramen magnum to reattach a decapitation.'

INGUINAL LIGAMENT

- Anatomical structure forming the base of the femoral triangle; extends from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubic tubercle. The inguinal ligament is the base of the femoral triangle.'

HUMAN REMAINS

- Body of a deceased person, including cremated remains.'

PITTING EDEMA

- Condition in which interstitial spaces contain such excessive amounts of fluid that the skin remains depressed after palpation. Pitting edema can be treated chemically with high index fluids which are dehydrating, edematous fluids which are hypertonic in nature that draws the excess moisture out and by mechanical means such as pressure and or wicking.'

COMBINATION UNIT

- Container used to ship un-casketed Remains.'

EMBALMING REPORT aka CASE REPORT

- Detailed listing of body conditions and treatments performed by funeral personnel for all bodies received into a facility for preparation. Report filled out for each body prepared and for each body received from another funeral home.'

DECEDENT CARE REPORT

- Documentation of body conditions and subsequent treatments when sheltering, or preparing a body for visual identification prior to cremation; or for a body received from another facility.'

PACKING FORCEPS

- Embalming instrument used in filling the external orifices of the body with an absorbent material.'

NEPHRITIS

- Inflammation of the kidneys that can cause an increase in nitrogenous waste.'

DRESSING TABLE

- Preparation room equipment which is specifically designed for the dressing of the deceased.'

HORSESHOE CURVE

- Roughly U-shaped, with the front being narrower than the sweep of the curve. The shape of the mouth is horseshoe shape/curve.'

HUNTING BOW

- Shaped as a bent wood weapon with a central belly; resembling a cupids bow. Shape of the attached margin of the upper red lip; shape of the lip line of closure.'

WEATHER LINE

- The line of color change at the junction of the wet and dry portions of each mucous membrane. The weather line is the line where the superior and inferior mucous membranes should meet/abut for the line of mouth'

ASPIRATION

- Withdrawal of gas, fluids, and semi-solids from body cavities and hollow viscera by means of suction with an aspirator, hose and a trocar.'

HEAD REST -

A Piece of equipment used to maintain the head in the proper position during the embalming process. The head in the casket should appear straight or tilted no more than 15 degrees to the right.'

MAXILLA -

A paired bone with several processes that form the skeletal base of most of the superior face, roof of the mouth, sides of the nasal cavity, and floor of the orbit'

PANTS -

A plastic garment which fits tightly around the waist and thighs of the deceased to guard against leakage and to avoid stains and odors.'

EYECAP -

A thin, dome-like plastic shell placed beneath eyelids to restore natural curvature and to maintain the position of posed eyelids. An aid in eye closure.'

HYDROTHORAX -

Abnormal accumulation of fluid in the thoracic Cavity.'

ASCITES -

Accumulation of serous fluids in the peritoneal aka abdominal cavity.'

HERMETIC SEAL -

Airtight seal; associated with Ziegler cases or soldered containers.'

MUSCULATURE SUTURE -

An acceptable method of mouth closure in which a suture is passed through the septum of the nose and through the mentalis muscle of the chin.'

UNIONALL -

An embalming supply that is defined as a plastic garment designed to cover the entire body from the neck down to and including the feet.'

DEODORANTS aka MASKING AGENTS aka PERFUMING AGENTS -

Chemical found in arterial fluid having the capability of displacing an unpleasant odor or of altering an unpleasant odor so that it is converted to a more pleasant one. Chemicals having the capability of displacing an unpleasant odor or of altering an unpleasant odor so that it is converted to a more pleasant one historically called re-odorants.'

HARDENING COMPOUND -

Chemical in powder form that has the ability to absorb moisture and/or preserve tissue; used in cavity treatment of autopsied cases. Chemical in powder form that has the ability to absorb and to disinfect. Often used in cavity treatment for autopsied cases.'

SKIN-SLIP aka DESQUAMATION -

Condition of decomposition wherein the epidermis begins to separate from the underlying dermal Layer.'

AIR TRAY -

Container used to ship casketed remains.'

HYDRONEPHROSIS -

Distention of the pelvis and calyces of one or both kidneys with urine as a result of obstruction.'

INNER CANTHUS -

Eminence at the medial corner of the closed Eyelids.'

PERITONITIS -

Inflammation of the peritoneum, the membranous coat lining the abdominal cavity and investing the viscera.'

DENTAL TIE -

One of several methods used for mouth closure. Often it is not a practicable method of mouth closure because older adults are missing most if not all of their teeth. Could be an acceptable method of mouth closure if the deceased had teeth. A less invasive method of mouth closure. Particularly if you do not have permission to embalm.'

COVERALL

Plastic garment (supply) designed to cover the body from the chest down to the upper thigh.'

CAPRI GARMENT -

Plastic protective garment designed to cover the legs, buttocks, and abdomen. A combination of pants and stockings. They are a supply that is used to prevent leaks in the Casket.'

NASOLABIAL FOLD -

The anterior fold of the cheek which descends laterally along the upper lip from the wing of the nose; a natural facial Marking.'

MANDIBLE -

The horseshoe-shaped bone forming the inferior jaw.'

PHILTRUM -

The vertical groove located medially on the superior lip; a natural facial marking.'
