AP distal humerus: acute flexion of elbow

Relationship of the distal humerus

AP elbow (x-ray)

True AP projection - lateral and medial epicondyles of the distal humerus have to be parallel to the IR (Central ray perpendicular to joint space, 40 inches, Wrist and elbow needs to be in the same plane)

PA axial olecranon process with central ray angulation

- 20 degrees - relationship of the proximal, radius and ulna

AP oblique elbow: lateral rotation

- 30/45 degrees angle of the sponge

Coyle method: demonstration of the coronoid process and trochlea

- 80 degrees - central ray 45 degrees

Axiolateral projection of the elbow: Coyle method

- 90 degrees - central ray 45 degrees toward the shoulder - demonstration of radial head and capitulum

AP elbow, wide latitude

- True AP projection - lateral and medial epicondyles of the distal humerus have to be parallel to the IR (Central ray perpendicular to joint space, 40 inches, Wrist and elbow needs to be in the same plane)

PA proximal forearm: full flexion of elbow

- central ray 45 degrees, perpendicular to the forearm

Recumbent position: AP humerus

- hand is supinated

AP oblique elbow: lateral rotation (x-ray)

- palm upward, rotated laterally - purpose: radial head is in profile, radial tuberosity

AP oblique elbow: medial rotation (x-ray)

Hand is palm down, Purpose: coronoid process in profile and electron in the electron fossa

Lateral elbow

Shoulder, wrist and elbow on the same plane - 90 degrees - Wrist in true lateral position (Olecranon process is in profile, Coronoid process to the distal part of the humerus is in relation, Epipcondyle are perpendicular to each other, Fat pads will show if there is trama)

AP elbow, partially flexed, demonstrating distal humerus

done if the elbow is injured

AP elbow, partially flexed, demonstrating proximal forearm

done if the elbow is injured

Recumbent position: Lateral humerus

posterior aspect of the hand is against the thigh

PA axial distal humerus

relationship of the distal humerus, central ray of 75 degrees
