What is reality shock?
it is a reaction experienced when one moves into the workforce after several years of school. Recent graduates are expected to be competent, capable nurses without any experience. increased acuity combined with a nursing shortage leaves a GN feeling depressed, insecure and powerless
describe novice
no clinical experience in situations that they are expected to perform difficulty applying theoretical concepts to patients when you are a GN

describe the honeymoon phase
nursing looks rosey, gn is facinated about arriving to the profession. no one looking over your shoulder anymore. this is short lived because you start to identify conflicts with the way you were taught and the way that it actually is.
describe the recovery phase
starting to feel more humor and decreased tension during this phase is when conflict resolution begins to occur if resolution happen with a positive attitude the GN will grow into a more full person
describe advance beginner
this is your GN -1 year mark you are starting to have skills "under your belt" from experience in actual situations that is recognized delivers marginally acceptable care *still concentrating on rules and take minimal regard to the situation
describe the competent phase
2-3 year clinical experience begins to see nursing actions in light of a patents longterm care can cope and manage difficult situations still lacks speed and ability of a proficient nurse but has that feelings of mastery
describe the proficient phase
4-5 years perceives a situation as a whole instead of in parts Has holistic understanding
expert
5-7 years very in depth understanding with an intuitive grasp. demonstrates highly skilled and analytical ability to problem solve mastered performance
