Reconnaissance And Security Ops
Define Recon in force
A deliberate combat operation designed to discover or test the enemy's strength, dispositions, and reactions or to obtain other information.
Define Zone recon
A directed effort to obtain detailed information on all routes, obstacles, terrain, and enemy forces within a zone defined by boundaries
Define Route recon
A directed effort to obtain detailed information of a specified route and all terrain from which the enemy could influence movement along that route.
Define local security
A priority of work and the responsibility of all units as a force protection measure.
What are the planning considerations for Reconnaissance and security operations?
Based upon the mission being conducted. Recon management/techniques Understanding of the OE
How aviation performs and/or supports in these recon and security missions
Based upon the mission being performed, the aviation asset will do a combination of the fundamentals of reconnaissance and will only bypass an enemy element once the ground commander allows it.
Be able to list each of the factors of the commanders' guidance and the criteria under each factor
Focus Tempo Engagement/Disengagement Criteria Displacement Criteria
Define Area recon
Focuses on obtaining detailed information about the terrain or enemy activity a prescribed area. allows for detailed reconnaissance in specific locations that answers PIR and develops the situation to provide options to the commander.
Where is the guidance found?
From the commanders intent. They specify it for each phase of the operation and makes adjustment when appropriate. Para 3-26 ATP 3-04.1 Opord? Mission order?
Cueing (part of recon management employment)
Integration of one or more types of recon or surveillance systems to provide information that "directs follow-on collecting" of more detailed information by another system.
List the fundamentals of recon (GORRDE) and security (MOPPP)
Orient on the objective Don't keep recon assets in reserve Ensure continuous recon Retain the freedom to maneuver Gain and maintain enemy contact Develop the situation rapidly Report info rapidly and accurately MOPPP is the fundamentals of security Provide early and accurate warning Provide reaction time and maneuver space Orient on the protected force, area, or facility Perform continuous recon Maintain enemy contact
Understand how each fundamental support each other, the CCIR,... .
PIR - Enemy info FFIR - Friendly info EEFI - Essential elements of Friendly Information - Friendly info that needs to be protected.
Define Guard
Prevent enemy observation and direct fire on the main body.
Define Cover
Protect the main body from enemy observation and effective direct and indirect fire.
Define Area Security
Protects friendly installations, routes, units, and facilities within a prescribed area.
Define Screen
Provide early warning to the main body
Describe the recon technique Pull
Pull - is used when commanders are *uncertain of the OE*, and time is limited. In these cases, reconnaissance assets initially work over a broad area to develop the enemy situation. As they gain an understanding of enemy weaknesses, they then *'pull' the main body to positions of tactical advantage*.
Recon Techniques & Management
Push Pull Cueing Mixing Redundancy
Define commander recon techniques
Push Pull
Describe the recon technique Push
Push - used when commanders have a relatively thorough understanding of the OE. In these cases commanders 'push' reconnaissance assets into specific portions of their areas of operation to confirm, deny, and validate planning assumptions impacting operations. Reconnaissance push emphasizes detailed, well-rehearsed planning.
List the forms of Security
Screen Guard Cover Area Security Local Security
Understand effect of not following a fundamentals has on the overall msn.
Timing and synchronization is paramount. Too early or too late and the mission fails. If you fail a fundamental you could fail the entire mission and not be able to report accurately and timely or to develop the situation.
Mixing (part of recon management employment)
Using two or more different assets to collect against the same intelligence requirement
List the forms of Reconnaissance
Zone, Area, Route, Recon by force, special recon
Define recon management employment
allows the unit to collect the most critical information with multiple perspectives at the appropriate time. Cueing, mixing, and redundancy are used to maximize collection efforts and allow primary focus on reconnaissance objectives likely to yield the most information
Define Special recon
characterized as reconnaissance and surveillance actions conducted as a special operation in hostile, denied, or politically sensitive environments to collect or verify information of strategic or operational significance employing military capabilities not normally found in conventional forces.
Redundancy (part of recon management employment)
using two or more like assets to collect against the same intelligence requirement
