Choose one of the parables from Luke's Gospel and explain how Jesus is "comforting the disturbed, and/or disturbing the comfortable."

In the Rich man and Lazarus, as soon as the rich man realizes he in in Hell and Lazarus made it to Heaven, he is disturbed as to why, since he was wealthy and popular in his time. But, God doesn't care about any of those material things, he cares about the true character of each person and the rich man wasn't a good person on the inside. He never fed, bathed, or clothed Lazarus, one of the "disturbed" of this time, so in Heaven, God finally comforts Lazarus and the rich man gets his justice. It disturbs the comforted because it teaches people that if they are not kind to those that are in need they will end up paying eventually. In order to get to heaven you need to treat people with kindness and compassion. God does not love some one more because they are more fortunate so just because you are rich on Earth doesn't mean you will automatically get to Heaven. God cares more about your good deeds than you wealth. If you have wealth then you should help others that aren't as fortunate as you. It would comfort the disturbed because even if they are treated poorly on earth they will be treated kindly in heaven with God

Explain how the Cain and Abel story is related to a Church teaching on justice.

Story: Cain kills Abel because Abel had a better sacrifice to give to God (sheep) compared to Cain's wheat. Cain was jealous of Abel being better than him- having better job, being able to give a better sacrifice than him, so Cain decides to kill Abel. When God asks where Abel is, Cain tells God he does not know "Am I my brothers keeper, basically telling God he is not responsible for Abel. This story teaches us that yes, we are responsible for one another. As human beings, we are one family and we need to protect each other and stand with each other.

Highlight 2 ideas of the theme, describe one problem in the world today (local, national or international) related to that theme, and then in the spirit of that theme, how could the problem be solved or at least lessen the negative effects?

The Call to Family, Community, and Participation -The way society runs determines the dignity of each human person -God created us not only to worship Him but to be social beings- to love, live in community and help one another and serve others -Marriage and Family must be strengthened because they are central to society- family is where we first learn to love and the love we learn because of our family is shown in how we treat others in our community -As children of God and as one big human family, we need to go out into the community and help those in need. Neighbors need to help other neighbors. We need to show kindness and love to those less fortunate than us Problem- poverty -This theme calls us to help our brothers and sisters in need. Poverty is a big issue not only here in the United States, but also throughout the world. To truly live this theme, we need to go out into our communities and help those less fortunate. This could be volunteering at a soup kitchen, donating food, clothes, water, or money, or even trying to make changes in your local community to try and get people out of poverty. It is our duty as children of God to go out in the world and take the love we have learned from our own families and bring that to the world. We need to help the people less fortunate than us, because even though it may seem like you have so many problems, there is always someone who is suffering more. We need to make sure the people in our community are taken care of and we need to donate our time and any resources to help the people that are struggling.

The Church's social doctrine, which is articulated as she interprets events in the course of history, with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, in the light of the truth of Revelation.

The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers

The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Workers have certain rights

Subsidarity

The moral principle that large organizations or governments should not interfere with, or take over, responsibilities that can be administered by individuals and local organizations, but rather should support them, always with a focus on the common good.

Magisterium

The official teaching authority of the Church. Jesus bestowed the right and power to teach in his name on Peter and the Apostles and their successors, that is the pope and college of Bishops.

Explain what lesson the story of the Egyptian midwives and Pharaoh's daughter in the book of Exodus has to teach about social justice.

The pharaoh orders the midwives to kill all the male Jewish babies. The midwives resisted the Pharaoh but they had very little power compared to him. The Pharoah's own daughter resists him by saving Moses. She sees him in the river and takes him in as her own. The story gives us the lesson of civil disobedience- sometimes you have to break the law to do the morally right thing. These women saw how wrong killing the babies was and they decided to resist evil. It is important that people resist evil, no matter how much or little power one has.

Stewardship

The proper use of the gifts God has given us, in particular, the care for creation that will allow the earth and its resources to flourish and last for future generations.

Solidarity

The virtue of social charity, friendship, and responsible sharing whereby the interdependence among all people is recognized.
