"Race music" is defined as music that was played by African-American people and was meant for only African-American people to listen to it.

In the 1950's the big, corporate record companies released "vanilla" records of songs by African-American artists but had white artists "cover" these songs. Why?

Corporate record companies did this in large part because it made the songs more popular making it so that they could make more money off of them. More people would listen to white radio because of the larger population of white people compared to black people. What most of the white artists did was change some of the lyrics, but not by much.
