When water boils is that a Chemical or Physical Change? Explain.

Physical. The substance is changing from a liquid to a gas, so it is changing state.

What are some of the things that they both have in common?

~ Color change ~ Viscosity ~ Energy ~ 2+ substances to change ~ Clumping

What is the main difference between a Physical and Chemical Change?

A Chemical Change forms into an entire new substance, while a Physical Change is the same substance but in a different form.

Define what a Chemical Change is :

A Chemical Change occurs when a substance changes and forms one or more new substances.

Define what a Physical Change is :

A Physical Change occurs when a substance changes, but it does not form a new substance.

What are some visual changes that can tell you that a Chemical Change has taken place?

Change in: color, production of a gas, formation of a precipitate, formation of light, oder, and/or change in temperature.

What are some visual changes that can tell you that a Physical Change has taken place?

Change in: solubility, and color

When a compound is formed is it a Chemical or Physical Change? Explain.

Chemical. It is when two or more elements are Chemically combined.

You add two substances together, and they start to clump and thicken. Would this be a Chemical or Physical Change? Explain.

Chemical. This is an example of a formation of precipitate.

When something is lit on fire and it is testing to see if it is flammable, is this a Chemical or Physical Change? Explain.

Chemical. You cannot un-burn something.

Why can the color change be both Chemical and Physical?

It can be Chemical if, the color changes into an entire new/different color. It can be Physical if, the color is the same but it goes a lighter/darker shade.

When you separate a mixture is it a Chemical or Physical Change? Explain.

Physical. If it was combined Physically, then it must be separated Physically.

You add a Kool-Aid Packet into water, and it changes color. Would this be a Chemical or Physical Change? Explain.

Physical. The Kool-Aid packet was red to begin with, so it did not undergo a drastic color change when it was added to the water.

You add an indicator to a substance and it stays the same color. Is this a Chemical or Physical Change? Explain.

Physical. There was no reaction, it was just a mixture between the two substances.

You add water to a powder, and the powder disappears. Would this be a Chemical or Physical Change? Explain.

Physical. This is an example of solubility.

You pour soda from a can into a cup of glass, and the soda rapidly bubbles. Would this be a Chemical or Physical Change? Explain.

Physical. You are not even adding another substance to the soda, you are just moving it.

List some of the Characteristics of a Physical Change :

~ It can be "undone" ~ Mixture (Homogenous, and Heterogeneous) ~ Change in state (solid, liquid, gas) ~ Does not change the chemical structure

List some of the Characteristics of a Chemical Change :

~ It cannot be "undone" most of the time ~ It re-arranges the atoms ~ Compound
