Compare and contrast the location of earthquake epicenters and plate boundaries in the maps below.

It seems to be that that were the earthquakes were happening it caused the plates to split into those parts. I feel that the Earthquakes had part in making t he the plate tectonics.

earthquake

Shaking and vibration at the surface of the earth resulting from underground movement along a fault plane of from volcanic activity

Use the map to describe patterns in the location of earthquake, epicenters and volcanic eruptions.

There are a lot of epicenters at the and of the plates in the East. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur near each other. They occur in relative predictable locations along the boundaries of tectonic plates.

why do earthquakes / eruptions most often occur near plate boundaries?

There are opening s in the crust which allow magma to escape. Plates grind each other and cause earthquakes

Are there any cluster of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that are not near a plate boundary? Explain

There are some Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions near the middle of the boundaries.

Compare and contrast earthquakes and volcanoes

They both occur on or near a plate boundary . An earthquake is a shaking of the Earth's surface due to release of energy. A volcanic eruption reales maga.

Where do earthquakes and volcanic eruptions most commonly occur?

They most commonly happen along the Western border of the Americas, northern India , Japan and the pacific ocean near Australia and Philippines.

True or False: Earth is covered with a thin layer of rock called lithosphere.

True

Mapping earthquakes epicenters and volcanic eruptions help scientist . . .

determine the location of tectonic plate boundaries, predict future earthquakes and predict future volcanic eruptions

Earthquakes and volcanoes most often occur at ?

the boundary of tectonic plates

mantle

the layer of Earth between the crust and the core

plate tectonics

the movement of plates that make up Earths surface

fossil

the remains, traces or imprint of an ancient living thing preserved in rock. Fossil can be bones , shells impressions or even foot prints

crust

the rocky outer layer of Earth

continental drift

the theory that the continents are moving very slowly . Wegener found evidence that the continents were once joined together in a giant super continent he called this pangea. His theory stated that when pangea broke up, the continents slowly drifted to their current positions

What is a fault ?

A fault is a fracture in the Earth's crust and is most often found at boundaries between tectonics.

lithosphere

A rigid layer made up of the uppermost part of the mantle and the crust.

what is the difference between an earthquake and volcanic eruption?

An earthquake originates from deeper in the Earth's crust while a volcanic eruption happens at on the Earth's surface An earthquake is associated with the releases of energy that builds up when plates rub or grind each other. A volcanic eruption is associated with the releases of magma from within Earth through fractures in earth's crust.

volcano

An opening in the Earths crust from which lava, ash and gases erupt

how would you describe the Earth?

Earth is an active planet, covered with plates that are constantly moving and interacting

Define the following terms. 1. Earthquake 2. volcano

Earthquake: a sudden shaking of the ground caused by the movement of rock underground. Volcano : an opening in the Earth's surface through which magma and gases or only gases erupt.

what are some changes that happen to the Earth that can make a rapid change?

Earthquakes, Volcanic Eruptions, Tsunamis , and Landslide

True or False: Earthquakes most often occur along tectonic plate boundaries and volcanoes most often occur in the center of tectonic plates

False; They both occur at the edge or along the tectonic plates

True or False: The lithosphere is not continuous ; it is broken apart into tectonic plates that move relative to each other. This movement creates little to no disturbances

False; This movement creates many disturbances along plate boundaries

True or False : Earthquakes are caused by buildup of energy when plates rub past each other. Earthquakes can then trigger a volcanic eruption.

False; Volcanic eruptions occur when magma escapes from fractures in the Earths crust.

do you think mapping earthquakes and volcanic eruptions is useful to scientist or is it a waste of time? Defend your answer.

I think it is useful because if they don't make where they happen they can forget and this won't be able to help them to show them maybe why it happening. An example of this would be if the scientist never kept track of all the earth quakes and eruptions they would have never thought of the ring of fire and how so many eruptions and earthquakes happen in that area. It shows where and when they happen.

what do you think is a more dangerous event - a volcanic eruption or an earthquake? Justify your answers

I think that earthquakes are more dangerous because it can happen through a range of area and earthquakes can cause building, homes and trees to fall even damage road and highways this could be life threatening and hurt many people. Yes volcanoes may be dangerous but they don't really spread that fair and you can try and outrun them, but you can't outrun an earthquake. Earthquakes can ruin things while volcanoes can make soul and make some damage.

How would you describe the activity of the Earths surface?

Tectonics plates are constantly moving and interacting. The movement and interaction of tectonics plates creates disturbances in Earth's crust, such as earthquakes and volcanoes and mountain ranges

collision zone

The place where a collision between two continental plates crunches and folds the rocks at the boundary, lifting them up and leading to mountain formation.

Use the map to describe where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions most often occur.

Volcanic eruptions often happen at the end of the plates in tropical places they even happen underwater . Earthquakes usually happen in California and Japan.they are also found underwater. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in common locations . They occur along plate boundaries

what are some changes that happen to the Earth that can make a slow change?

Weathering, Deposition, and Erosion

To the right is a map that represents earthquakes (circles) and volcanic eruptions (triangles) in 2012. Is there a pattern to the location of these events ?

Yes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions often occur in the same location. They occur along or near plate boundaries.

Is there a pattern to where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Yes, Most earthquakes and volcanoes occur in the same regions along the plate boundaries

How can you use this map to predict the location of tectonic plate boundaries ?

You can use this map to predict the location of tectonic plate boundaries by were earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. Doing this you can see that the Earthquakes and eruptions caused them to split apart. The location of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions can be used to maps plate boundaries. Boundaries are located where the Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions most often occur.

divergent boundary

a boundary between plates that are moving away from each other

convergent boundary

a boundary between plates that are moving toward each other

transform boundary

a boundary between plates that are sliding past on another

seduction zone

a convergent boundary were one plate is sliding beneath another

land mass

a large unbroken area of land

glacier

a large, slowly moving body of snow and ice

Asthenosphere

a layer of upper mantle in which rocks can deform like plastic. while the rock of the asthenosphere is almost solid, over long periods of time it can move like a liquid

plate

a rigid section of Earths crust that moves very slowly

Supercontinent

a single landmass that includes two or more continents.

pangea

an ancient super continent that scientist believe existed from about 200 to 300 million years ago

ice age

time when earth was very cold and large areas were covered by glaciers
