Science - Simple Machines
friction
A force that slows objects down when they rub against each other.
inclined plane
A plane that has one end higher than another end.
force
A push or pull on an object.
wedge
A simple machine that is wide at one end and pointed at the other to help cut or split other objects. Two inclined planes that come to a point to make lifting or splitting easier.
lever
A stiff bar that moves about a fixed point (fulcrum). A bar that pivots on a *fulcrum.*
pulley
A wheel with a groove for a rope that is used for lifting.
screw
An inclined plane wrapped around a shaft or cylinder or pole.
plane
Any flat surface.
fulcrum
The fixed point around which a lever pivots. A point which a lever rests.
Simple Machine
Tools that make work easier. Something that makes work easier and faster.
gear
Wheels with teeth that fit together.
work
When a force moves an object.
wheel and axle
a circular disk with a rod through its center to move loads.
hammer
example of a lever - a flat board or bar that rests on another object, called a fulcrum, that helps us use less force to move a heavy object
boat
example of a pulley - make of a wheel and a rope, the pulley helps raise or lower items or heavy loads
jar lid
example of a screw - an inclined plane, thread, wrapped around a cylinder
ramp
example of inclined plane - a flat sloping surface that makes the job of moving items up or down easier
door stop
example of wedge - two inclined planes put together that push two objects apart, cut an object in half, or an object in place
fan
example of wheel and axle - a rod (axle) goes through the wheel and allows the wheel to turn to improve the ability to move objects

effort
the force needed to move a load
